Epiphone is owned by Gibson, but the difference is that Epiphones are made either in China or Indonesia whereas the Gibsons are made in the USA. Both have solid mahogany bodies, both have solid maple tops, both have mahogany necks with rosewood frets. The Gibson has pearl inlays, while the Epi has Pearloid inlays. The Epiphone comes with high end Grover tuners only a few of the Gibsons do. The Gibson's have Gibson pickups; the Epiphone pro has probuckers, which will have a longer sustain than the Gibson ones. Some Epiphone custom Les Paul's come with Gibson pickups. The other Epiphones come wth P-90 pickups, which are not quite as good as Gibson or Probucker. The Gibson has a heavier duty three way switch and comes with better strings. All in all, the big difference is a better pickup, which will cost around $18 to replace and better strings which will cost you about $4 to upgrade. The question is whether there is $3,000 difference between the two guitars? **Q: I have two question. 1. May I know what is the use of push/pull coil-tapping? 2. Is it sound like Gibson?** A: The push/pull pots essentially shut off half your pickup, making a humbucker into a single coil. It really isn't coil tapping, that's a whole different thing. What they do is really called coil splitting. Single coils don't have the output that humbuckers do, so when you pull the pot out it will be quieter, usually with a more high end sound. And yes, it sounds like a Gibson. You can get that dirty classic rock growl. I own 2 and I really like them both. **Q: does it come with a hard case?** A: No it was extra. It was reasonably priced though. **Q: How does this compare with the "epiphone les paul 100?" they seem awfully similar and there's a significant price difference.** A: Off the top of my head, I believe the hardware is higher quality, the pickups are significantly better, and the plus top pro has coil-splitting capability for a wider range of tones. I love my plus top pro.
