I want to put it under a fish tank pump to make it a bit quieter.** A: The flat bit is very thin and not particularly spongey. The gel foam rest is much thicker and foamy but quite solid. **Q: Is this a good mouse mat for gaming?** A: I'd say it's only marginally big enough for a medium-sized hand for non-gaming, too small for my big hands and definitely too small for gaming - BUT - it depends on the game, your hand size, screen size and amount of mouse sensitivity/acceleration etc. Personally, I have large male hands and used a few of this type of mat and always end up finding them way too small even for non-gaming, yet also I don't like such a thick wrist support. Maybe it's because I'm tall-backed and end up keeping my chairs very low so my fore-arm comes in flat not angled.
