Can the keyboard be used if not attached to ipad? i have a stand that i would like to put the ipad on and then type from my lap.

Since you cannot fold the cover all the way back flat to the bottom of the keyboard, the cover will be open and maybe in the way of the iPad on another stand. The fold back range is limited to one position which is not far enough back to use on your lap- it’s at to vertical position to see well when in your lap. Needs to be on a table.

Does it fold back behind the iPad, if I want to take notes with my pencil instead of using the keyboard?

No - to take notes with a pencil you will have to remove the iPad from the key board to get the keyboard totally out of your way - the only way it folds it to close over the iPad

Can this be used whilst charging?

Yes — assuming your power source can handle the load.
