A VERY WORTHWHILE UPGRADE
The Panasonic ES-RF31 Wet & Dry four blade men's shaver was a replacement for my older Panasonic ES8183 3-blade wet & dry shaver which I had owned for around 8 years of totally, totally trouble-free, dependable use. Unfortunately, the old shaver died as a result of being dropped onto a hard floor once too often:-(. My old Panasonic shaver made me a devoted fan of Panasonic wet & dry shavers. I have also used Philips and Braun products. No electric shaver can come as close as Panasonic shavers in delivering a close dry, or wet shave. I would go as far as to say that when used as a wet shaver it can deliver as close a shave as many wet razors! I use my Panasonic in preference to a wet razor shave on my face and it really is as close a shave as a wet razor. My replacement, the ES-RF31 is absolutely no disappointment (and an improvement in most areas) compared to my trusty old ES8183. I shave my head every day and also have a full daily body shave too. I use the ES-RF31 to dry shave my face and head, then finish off with a Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 wet razor on my scalp. Sorry to say, even Panasonic wet & dry shavers haven't yet got as good as a blade at shaving the scalp. I like my head to be billiard ball smooth so I find the best approach is to shave first with my Panasonic, then finish off with my wet razor of choice. Mostly, the Panasonic is absolutely fine shaving my face dry and produces a very, very smooth finish. Occasionally though, I wet shave my face with the Panasonic too. That gives me an ultra smooth finish that is every bit as good as a wet razor shave. It's a shame I can't replicate that on my scalp as I would happily ditch the wet razor on my scalp. I also shave my body with the ES-RF31 in the shower, every day. It works great, but I am careful not to over wet the shaver even though it's a wet & dry product. To be honest, I have every faith in Panasonic's wet & dry shaver products to stay completely waterproof, but I like to be a little careful, just the same. I have owned my ES-RF31 for a little over two months now. It consistently delivers both dry and wet shaves that are better than my old ES8183. I can achieve a slightly closer shave, a little quicker, with the ES-RF31. The floating finishing blade attached to the head appears to do a good job too and is not just a gimmick. The shaving head uses the same pivoting technology as in my old ES8183. It simply works perfectly, no ifs, no buts, it works thanks to superior Japanese design. In fact the shaver is undeniably a big brand Japanese product. It works well, it does what says it does, it is well built and if it lasts like my old ES8183 will give me many years of completely hassle free, reliable shaving. The ES-RF31 is much quieter than my old ES8183 in operation. The design of the case of the ES-RF31 is better to hold (for me) than my old Panasonic was. I miss the digital readout display in the body of my old Panasonic. I could have got that if I wanted to pay more for a higher specification model. The ES-RF31 has three LED's to indicate the amount of battery power left. It works fine, but I was spoiled a little, I guess, by the digital readout on my old ES8183. There is no charging stand with the ES-RF31, again I feature I enjoyed with my old ES8183. I think that's a really useful addition and I would have liked a charging stand at this price point. If I have one minor criticism concerning the design and operation of the ES-RF31 is that the bulk of the shaving head can be a little difficult to manipulate in those awkward areas. But, this is minor and perhaps to be expected when having the comparative luxury of a four blade shaver. Overall, I'm very, very pleased with the ES-RF31. Another terrific Panasonic shaving product at a price that puts both Philips and Braun to shame. I highly recommend Panasonic wet & dry shaving products and the ES-RF31 in particular for its capability and quality versus the very reasonable price.

great shaver but steep learning curve
After using this shaver for 3 weeks I can now confirm that it gives a good close shave - as good as a wet shave. 5 stars for the shaver design then. However, it has required a lot of researching websites (shavers.co.uk etc) to find out how to get the close shave. The first shave was not good. It turns out that swapping from a wet razor (Wilkinson Sword 4 blade), I had to allow the top layer of skin on my face (which is removed every time you wet shave) to grow back. Sure enough, after a week of electric shaving things did improve. Next issue - how to use the shaver. The great thing about this shaver is that it is completely waterproof so you can use it in the bath or shower, just like a razor. As with a razor/wet shaving I am finding that prepping my face with plenty of hot water softens the bristles, and I can then apply shaving cream etc. I have found drying my face and applying Lab Series pre-electric shave works best. I shave against the grain, as recommended. Shaving requires a lot of going over the same spots, particularly on the neck, but is not causing me any razor burn or soreness (I think the pre-electric shave + softened bristles are helping a lot here). The shave is really close and the pre-electric shave leaves my skin feeling nice and soft. After shaving it is easy to dab a little shower gel onto the top of the shaving head, switch on the shaver and wash it out under the shower - job done. Once a week I am cleaning the shaver with Braun Cleaning Spray to keep everything running smoothly. The shaver holds its charge for about a week, shaving once a day, and then needs roughly one hour to re-charge. So why only 4 stars? I think Panasonic just need to explain a bit more about how to use their product. Maybe add some anecdotes on their website and explain what types of shaving products can be used either wet or dry.

A Return to Electric Shaving
I gave up electric shaving some years ago as it was a slow and unpleasant experience. I have used the Gillette and Wilkinson Sword multi blade razors ever since, but I did suffer from skin irritation. I recently read an article about shaving and it stated that men who used an electric shaver had less skin irritation. I found this hard to believe considering my previous experience. Having done some online research I discovered that electric shaving had changed for the better. I discovered that the best electric shave for me was a wet shave with a foil razor, but which razor. Sadly it is not possible to try an electric razor before purchase and they can be very expensive. After reading many reviews on Amazon and other sites I decided that Panasonic was the brand for me. I choose this razor because it is a reliable brand, its robust and it has a flexible shaving head which is good for shaving your neck. The other reason I choose this razor is the amazing price on Amazon £56. The full price is £160 and it is being sold by Boots for £133. Most shaving sites state that it takes about two weeks for your beard and skin to adapt to electric shaving, so I approached my first shave with some trepidation. However my first shave was an instant success. I washed my face and applied three drops of King of Shaves oil and shaving was a very smooth experience with no discomfort. I do feel that it is much easier transferring from a blade razor to a foil electric shaver because the shaving action is very similar. The only difference is you are shaving against the grain. It is now about three weeks since I started using the electric razor and the skin on my face has improved, no lumps and bumps. I am now getting a closer and far more comfortable shave and I will not return to a blade razor. I recommend this razor because it is well made, it has no gadgets and it is very easy to use. Also it is very cheap on Amazon.

Top quality shaver and great price!
I have had several so called top quality shavers that go well into 3 figure sums like the Braun series 9 and Panasonic ARC 5 and 6 and none of them are any better than this £60 shaver from Panasonic and in fact under perform compared to this EF31 I do think when it comes to shavers like so many products manufacturers play the numbers marketing game trying to outdo each other in the case of shavers it's blades Panasonic themselves are guilty of this with their latest top of the range '6 blade shaver' when in fact the actual shavers have only 2 cutting blocks but supplement this with clever trickery with foils. Braun are also guilty of this but have recently took a backward step in my opinion by now incorporating the blade into the foil itself on there top of the line series 7 and 9 shavers. My original Braun series 7 from 10 years ago was the best shaver I ever owned but unfortunately the battery died after many years of sterling service but this older Panasonic EF31 model which itself is now quite venerable is the closest to that original Braun series 7. The build quality is excellent well made in Japan , no frills just a cable, brush and soft case (I've purchased an after market hard case that fits perfectly) Marketed as 4 blades but there's 2 cutting blocks under the foil head but crucially there are spaced further apart than standard shavers like Braun and the 2 extra foils are between the live cutting blocks and this is a crucial design feature in my opinion. It doesn't have a fancy % power remaining display but a simple 3 block LED power display, the head doesn't swivel in a myriad of directions or different planes but can swivel side to side, the foils do move independently though in and out and feel very comfortable against my skin. How close does this shave?...very close in fact best in class and punching well above its weight , it's relatively quiet in operation and feels nice ergonomically in the hand being well designed. Charging from empty takes an hour to full and the full tank will give around 45 mins of shaving time. Thoroughly recommend this shaver at £60 it's a no brainer if you are looking for a foil shaver of exceptional performance.

GREAT SHAVER, 2ND BUY, IGNORE THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS, HERE'S WHY....
I used to buy Braun shavers but the foils kept breaking and carving my face up. So knowing all Panasonic products are excellent I tried this shaver. I had my last one for at least 5 years and the foil never broke and the blades stayed sharp with regular application of WAHL oil which I also recommend. Of course Panasonic tell you to replace the foil and blades every 6 months but this is not necessary. It has cut off a 4 day strong growth of course stubble many times. Yes you have to go over it a few times but for the price it is fantastic. Why do some people think shavers costing well over £100 are better, I'm sure they aren't. After over 5 years of use I noticed the noticed the motor is slower and the blades not as sharp, but this is to be expected with ant electric shaver. So seeing the same shaver at less than I paid for the original over 5 years ago I bought it. I have underlying discord eczema on my face and very thin sensitive skin. Never once have I had shaving rash or cuts from this shaver. You may have to go over more than one day's growth more than once, quite a few times but I can remove 4 days heavy growth in 7 minutes. Not as quick as a wet blade shave or some much more expensive shavers ? Maybe but it's a bargain for the price..... HIGHLY RECOMMEND

good shave, other aspects flawed (updated)
I use this shaver to shave my head every other day. I bought it to replace a six or seven year old philishave rotary shaver, so that's my benchmark for this review. Overall, the shave is faster and better, but the overall experience of this product is more mixed. Compared to the philishave, the panasonic shaves my head (which is fairly large and thick-haired) in about half the time, and to a noticeably smoother finish. It is also better on longer hair (3 or 4 days). That's the good part. The first downside is that the panasonic is messier - it doesn't collect the cut hair nearly as well as the philishave and takes longer to clean (I have discovered that if you clean it with water just before use rather than after you end up less covered in cut hair). Charging is also an issue. The philishave got about 45 minutes shaving from a charge, and the panasonic is similar, but the philishave gave plenty of warning as the battery got low, and most importantly could be used while charging. The panasonic seems to go from showing full charge to running out quite quickly, and can't be used while charging, which means either charging it every time I use it, having a back-up shaver for when the battery runs out, or being prepared to wait an hour in mid-shave for it to recharge. I can live with the messiness, so if the charging issues could be solved this would be a five star review, but they do make ownership of the shaver more annoying than it needs to be. EDIT - the Panasonic is also a lot higher-maintenance. The foils are quite fragile and expensive to replace (around £40) and in less than 6 months I've seen a noticeable deterioration in shaving performance to the point where it isn't much better than the old philishave.

Competent shaver
Although I wet shave every morning, I use this for a top up shave before any evening events. So it is not heavily used. That said, I find it does the job for me and shaves remarkably closely, without any of the cutting experienced by others, although the head is a bit bulky.
