Would definitely use this again.
Used this to prime some melamine kitchen cupboards before painting. Gave them a good clean with sugar soap, let them dry and got busy with a brush and mini-roller to apply the primer. Found it to be quite a thin primer, but it didn't run when applied. It had the consistency of a thin pva glue, but the coverage was excellent and stayed where I put it, no drips or pools or splatter. It dries very quickly, which is important when you've got a house full of geriatric dogs who keep bumbling into everything! Touch dry in 15 minutes is actually accurate, and was applying the first coat of paint over the primer in less than an hour. The smell isn't great, but with the windows open it wasn't too unpleasant. I'm very happy with the quality of the product and have plenty left over from priming 20 kitchen cupboards for other projects. Excellent coverage, and good value. Highly recommend.

Good product
Does the job but boy does this smell. I was coating some oak stair spindles with it all day and it’s really noticeable. It’s not a wholly unpleasant smell, I couldn’t put my finger on it, but it kept reminding me of burnt caramel. That aside, it covers well and stops tannins seeping through as expected. Once applied don’t over brush. When you apply, after a minute or two has passed dont go back and touch up- instead let it dry first. It also runs so take care in application. All that said it applies well with a good brush.

Great
Good stuff, a bit pricey though.

Excellent
Excellent. But must use two coats. Especially on melamine.

Terrific for covering offgassing from previous toxic paint layers.
I have allergies to many chemicals & needed something to cover up previous coats of paint to stop them offgassing. This is the best Ive found, having experimented with various hypoallergenic varnishes which are supposed to do the same thing but don't. This reeks of alcohol for 15 mins, then...nothing! No smell, & nothing getting thru from experimental layers of paint I'd added to a spare plank of wood. Love it.

Best base coat
Literally the best stuff money can buy! Does pretty much any surface for a good base coat. Careful when applying as it’s very runny

Runniest primer ever!
I bought this because I read that using a shellac-based primer gets rid of musty smells inside cupboards, as it seals the surface, sealing the odor-causing bacteria inside. After years of trying to dry laundry in front of a panel heater in a room I get a stubborn musty smell inside a cupboard. I've tried everything else to get rid of it now I have a tumble drier, but nothing worked. This is my last resort - to paint inside with shellac based primer. This brsnd has the best reviews, so here we are. I hope it gets rid of the mustiness because, my goodness, it is awful to work with! Up close inside a cupboard it stinks so be very careful to avoid the fumes. It is runny like water and drips all over. Very messy to use. Wear latex gloves too because it runs all over the paintbrush handle. It dries really fast so if using a brush it is problematic because overbrushing looks a sticky mess - not a problem inside my cupboard, but if the area will be visible after priming, I think you would probably need to lightly sand it. I used both brush and a small roller and found the roller to be much easier to work with. It still flicks everywhere because the consistency is so thin but if you wipe it up quickly that problem is easily overcome. I've got all my windows open and the cupboard doors open and will leave it to dry for the rest of the day before I put stuff back inside. Will report back in a while to comment on whether it eliminated the musty smell. Overall it is the runniest, messiest primer I have ever used. I've given three out of five for that but if the mustiness is banished, I will amend it to five stars.

A little tricky to use but (though it is early days) it seems to do the job
I often use Zinsser primers for decorating jobs and have had excellent results with Zinsser Bullseye products. This time I have used Zinsser BIN to coat some wood (dado, skirting etc) which had been previously been coated with a dark wood stain. Apparently this primer will stop that stain leaking through to the surface, although it is too early for me to comment on whether that is the case! I was surprised at how runny the primer is and found it a little difficult until I got the hang of it. I found I needed to put a small amount on the brush and paint it on carefully to avoid immediate drips. (Too much on the brush and it immediately runs off the wood and onto the floor.) After a minute or two, however, the applied primer seemed to thicken on the wood and could be spread out more easily. A little of this primer seems to go a long way. It dries very quickly and can be overcoated with more primer, if needed, about an hour later. I left it a couple of days before applying my white one-coat gloss paint. The results appear to be very good, but the real test will be whether the wood stain does not seep through (I will update this review at some point in the future). Next, I plan to use this primer on some old melamine wardrobes that I want to overpaint. I asked the manufacturer about this and they told me that Zinsser BIN will be the right primer for this, as I will not need to sand down the melamine first - the primer will stick to it and provide a suitable base for overpainting. Watch this space!
