Yes you get the typical “spinning” noise when the hard drive is in use but nothing too disturbing like the sound of pots and pans being bashed about. Literally some people over exaggerate noise like wth I mean you must have one dodgy hard drive the way you make it out to be when all 3 of mine are quieter than a sleeping hamster. Hope that helps solve your question. **Q: Can this be used on both PC and Mac?** A: I would recommend exFAT over FAT32 or NTFS; while NTFS can be written to on OS X it has never been well supported, and FAT32 has significant limitations. Even ExFAT isn't ideal, but it can handle bigger files, copy more efficiently and is supported on Mac, Linux and Windows as standard.
