Does the job, just without much of a speed range
Edit - Been using it for several months now, and it's still working fine, so I feel it deserves to get an additional star - 4 instead of 3. It's still not going to get that elusive 5th star because of the lack of speed range. Bear this in mind when reading the original review below. It was cheap and feels reasonably sturdy, though it remains to be seen how long the motor will last with use. As highlighted by a number of reviewers, the speed control is a bit messed up, and that, for me, is where the stars are lost. Mixers I have used in the past have speed settings ranging from slow up to fast in gradual increments - this is useful when mixing as you can start with a slow speed when things are loose, powdery or sloppy and slowly build up the speed. This mixer has speeds ranging from fast up to slightly faster in *very* gradual increments, which almost always results in some part of the kitchen needing a wipe down. The speed control is also a little sensitive, with a slight touch sometimes causing it to turn off. On the whole, not overly impressed so far, but it does the job so not ready to give it an entirely negative rating - I may come back and adjust this review if it breaks or catches fire as some reviewers have said.

Cheap and Cheerful
I am writing this prior to really testing it because I am suspicious I have been sent a "return" by Amazon!!!!!! Box not sealed, inner packaging shredded, no twist tie on cable, no plastic pin cover on plug. What would you think????? Anyway, I stuck the, very short, beaters in the machine and switched it on. As other users have said, the slowest speed is very fast so maybe icing sugar is out (My big Kenwood can do it and will freeze what's left). I only really use a hand mixer to throw together a Vic Sponge if unexpected visitors, whip cream or egg whites for souffle etc., otherwise I use my stand mixer, especially for bread etc.. It was cheap and will do the job. The motor is small so not expecting miracles. Will update once I have used it a bit. Only bought a cheaper as my old one died yesterday. It was a Moulinex (don't even know if they are still on the go?) and the receipt was in the box from 1989!!!!! I think I had my money's worth from that one!!!!! It was a good friend all those years so this has some living up to do!!!!!!

Bought this item recently and have had it for less than 1 week. On the first use, there was a weird smell but it did the job and I assumed I had used it on the wrong speed, especially as it was new. I was making 12 queen cakes! I used it for the second time yesterday, again for a batch of 12 queen cakes and using on the lowest setting, it burned out halfway through mixing. Seems like very poor quality and not fit for it's basic purpose!
