The problem normally shows up after the truck sits for a week or more. They were leaving the factory new like this. Not sure if there ever was a exact diagnosis to the problem. Usually after idling and warmup for a few minutes and placing the gear selector in and out of reverse it will work, may clunk and jerk. If you research that year you might find some explanations. Other than that if it hasn't sat for a period of time you may look for the transmission code. It's a pressure issue and solenoid.
