## Overview

Prima Arta Electron offers 20g of 99.99% pure gallium, a semiconductor-grade raw material with a melting point of 29.7°C. Perfect for scientific research and advanced tech projects, this corrosion-resistant element demands careful handling due to its sticky nature and skin-irritant properties.

## Description

Gallium is a chemical element with symbol Ga and atomic number 31. The Melting point is 29.7 °C. Gallium Precautions & Tips Don’t be fooled by the youtube videos. * Although considered non-toxic, according to the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), gallium is a skin irritant and glove protection should be worn. * Gloves should be worn for another reason - when solid, it disperses into very fine particles that will ingrain themselves in your skin, discolouring it grey, and the stain is difficult to remove. (easy enough though with a bit of Cif.) * Handle in on a disposable surface - Even the slightest speck of gallium will cause a large grey smudge on a surface. * Gallium is very sticky, and as such, moving it the way you desire becomes a challenge. It slides more easily off plastic, but it’ll even stick to that. When you try and pour gallium, the last dregs will solidify due to cooling, making full transfer a painstaking process requiring heat and inventive thinking. * You will not do well by ‘scraping off’ gallium as some of the youtube videos recommend. It will either stick to whatever you are scraping it off with, or it will turn into a fine grey powder which makes it more difficult to work with. * Unfortunately, gallium is not magnetic, so it cannot be picked up or transferred that way. * Don’t let gallium touch other metals, unless of course, you plan to cause corrosion. * Don’t mold a key with gallium and use it in the keyhole - it has an excellent chance of snapping (it’s brittle like glass) or, even worse, melting whilst in there.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: what is it used for**
A: I found this on Wiki:-"Gallium readily alloys with most metals, and has been used as a component in low-melting alloys. A nearly eutectic alloy of gallium, indium, and tin is a room temperature liquid that is available in medical thermometers. This alloy, with the trade-name Galinstan (with the "-stan" referring to the tin), has a low freezing point of −19 °C (−2.2 °F).37 It has been suggested that this family of alloys could also be used to cool computer chips in place of water.38 Gallium alloys have been evaluated as substitutes for mercury dental amalgams, but these materials have yet to see wide acceptance.Because gallium wets glass or porcelain, gallium can be used to create brilliant mirrors. When the wetting action of gallium-alloys is not desired (as in Galinstan glass thermometers), the glass must be protected with a transparent layer of gallium(III) oxide."

**Q: are gloves necessary to wear or can i just hold it, also to get it back in to a soild what do i do where do i store it**
A: Gallium is non-toxic and can be held in your hand without gloves. However, it can leave a slight oily residue behind (though this washes off fairly easily). The metal comes in a small plastic box, which is fine for storing it in when not in use. The metal will naturally solidify once it cools.

**Q: How to become a liqute?**
A: Raise the temperature above 29.76degC. This can be done in a hand, but may stain hand with fine grey metal. Or, place in preferably a plastic container and lower into warm water. Plastic is best as glass is "wetted " by the molten gallium. Also it expands on re- freezing, and might therefore crack a glass container.

**Q: do i need to wear gloves to use it?**
A: No you don't need to wear gloves but I would advise to wash your hands after, for it can be bad if you eat it ;)

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Interesting stuff
*by S***E on 19 April 2013*

This is very interesting stuff, its like Mercury but not toxic and unless you warm it in your hand it is as hard and solid as any other metal.I had this about 5 minutes before i suddenly realized how some unscrupulous magicians especially one who i will not name manages to bend spoons and break them just with the warmth from his finger tips. Probably manages i should say.I don't have enough to pour it into a spoon shaped mould but i have made just a little stick with it and yes it melts when it is rubbed to make friction to warm it up a bit

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ KEEP AWAY FROM METAL!
*by A***R on 12 December 2014*

No warnings on the packaging about what this can do to metals so loses a star.In particular, it will KILL anything aluminium. This potentially includes expensive electronics, mobile phones and commercial aircraft. Fun to play with but with the potential for an unhappy ending.Once it melts in your hand, it will form a very fine layer of molten metal that looks like a grey residue but is actually tiny droplets. Be very careful not to contaminate other metals with it.Take a quick look on YouTube for a video of gallium attacking an aluminium Star Trek badge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_KE0uZSTjU

### ⭐ more info required on item description
*by L***Y on 21 October 2013*

I had actually bought this as I make jewellery and thought I could wire wrap it as a pendant, didn't realise that it melted or softened. When I received it - it was just a square of metal and I was very disappointed that I had spent £16 on an item that would be pretty boring as a pendant. I went on to read the reviews and look into how to return it and found that it melts with the heat of your hands - I stupidly rubbed it between my hands to get it to warm (don't do this if wearing white or no were near a sink). My hands became very black and some of the metal did melt which was interesting. Then noticed that my 9ct gold wedding ring has changed colour and half of it is now silver - im hoping this comes off - but its looking very unlikely at the minute !! so wouldn't recommend using it if wearing gold jewellery - just in case it is permanent ! I would ask the seller to put more information on amazon for the item - for people like myself who bought it on a whim and didn't read the reviews.
