This is Christmas
I have adored this film since i was a child and loved watching it on tv on Christmas eve. The scenes of the sleigh flying across a starlit sky was so magical and exciting to me as a child and it still brings back those evocative memories and feelings. I haven’t watched this bluray version as yet, but am looking forward to it later in December.

A nostalgic trip back to childhood.
Growing up in the UK with this film on a VHS recorded from the TV years earlier was one of my best Christmas memories as a kid. I never understand how the US audience always despised this film when it has all its charm and delight. With a perfect cast, John Lithgow as the scheming cigar-munching magnate was always my guilty favourite! Seeing it get the 4K remaster was a surprise nonetheless, I had to pick it up for this Christmas just past, so Christmas Eve came, and yes. Just yes. Its never looked better. Although dim and flat in some scenes, yet warm and crisp in others, the select use of its dynamic range in Dolby Vision sticks through to bring in that little bit of magic and glitter that made the film so memorable. Can't wait for next Christmas Eve!

This Classic 1985 Christmas film is a British/American Christmas production starring David Huddleston, Dudley Moore and John Lithgow. It is the last major fantasy film produced by the Paris-based father-and-son production team of Alexander and Ilya Salkind. -This Blue Ray Edition Presents The Film In 1080p High Definition Wide Screen, which is a major upgrade from it's previous transfers which were always quite poor. I couldn't believe the difference when I put it in my blue ray player! It's like watching a Brand New film. This magical film starts somewhere in the 14th century. Claus is a peasant woodcutter in his mid-50s who, with his wife Anya, delivers his gifts to the children of a local village every Christmas Eve. One night, Claus, Anya and their reindeer, Donner and Blitzen, are rescued from certain death in a terrible snow blizzard in the middle of the Winter forest, only to be magically transported to the vast "ice mountains, way up at the top of the world." Their expected arrival is heralded with the appearance of several elves, or as Claus's people call them in their legends....the Vendequm, led by the venerable and wise elf named Dooley. Soon, the future of Claus and his wife Anya is revealed to them, and it is explained that like the Vendequm (elves) they will live forever. Then on the very 1st Christmas Eve of Claus's new appointment the most ancient of the elves (played by burgess Meredith)slowly walks down the centre of the great Toy Tunnel, and the name "Santa Claus" is officially given in a sequence that will take your breath away. Centuries pass as the mythology of Santa is created, until we reach the 20th century (present time). This is where the PLOT of the film kicks in. The elf named PATCH (played by the famous Dudley More) sets off on a journey to New York City to prove to Santa Claus that he really is a great toy maker. He unfortunately falls into the company of a very Evil and Corrupt Toy Factory owner named B.Z.(played brilliantly by John Lithgow). Santa, desperate to find Patch and bring him back home to the North Pole comes to New York and stumbles across a 10 year old orphan boy named JOE living on the streets, who tags along with Santa over the next 2 Christmas Eves. On the side, the boy develops a relationship with the young niece of the EVIL Toy factory owner B.Z. and the plot thickens. The film has excellent special effects for its time (Pre-CGI)including Flying scenes on Santa's sleigh with all his reindeer, sky chases, and an excellent visual depiction of Santa's home at the North Pole. Is what I personally enjoy about the film, is it'sthe only Christmas Film made to date....that I know of that tells a story of the history of how Santa Clause came into being. This film has been one of my yearly Christmas traditions for the last 28 years. Based on the Nevelization,The elves in the film are portrayed as legendary beings known as the Vendequm. According to the Santa Claus: The Movie novelization written by science fiction/fantasy novelist Joan D. Vinge, the elves keep watch over all that happens in the world that borders their own magical realm. The Vendequm are described as being extremely fond of children since, after all, only children can see them, due to the innocence of their youth. The elves are fond of making things for children, and so they often journeyed out into the children's world, leaving their newly crafted toys where children would find them. According to the novel, with the passing of each new century, and as civilizations continued to rise and fall, it became more and more difficult and dangerous for the elves to venture too far out into the human world. Thus, the vast majority of the toys the elves made could not be given out, and were left to gather dust in their magnificent storeroom, the Toy Tunnel. The novel also describes how, on a certain long-winter's night, the oldest and wisest elf of all, the Ancient One, foresaw the arrival of a man whose love for children would be equal to that of the elves. The Ancient One believed that this man would be the one to whom the elves would grant full immortality, along with the ability to deliver the elves' gifts to children all over the world.
