**Steinel Motion Sensor IS 140-2 Black: Enhanced Security and Convenience**
I recently installed the Steinel Motion Sensor IS 140-2 Black in my home, and I must say, it has exceeded my expectations in terms of both security and convenience. Here's why I'm impressed: Firstly, the adjustability of this motion sensor is outstanding. It can be horizontally and vertically adjusted, allowing for targeted detection along the building with a wide 140° angle of coverage. This ensures that every corner of the area is monitored effectively. The range of the motion detector is also impressive, reaching up to 14 meters. This extensive coverage ensures that large areas are thoroughly surveyed, providing enhanced security and peace of mind. One of the standout features of the IS 140-2 is its use of spherical Fresnel lenses. These lenses detect people with great precision and consistency, ensuring reliable detection without false alarms. Furthermore, the optical system of the motion sensor can be swiveled through 180° and tilted through 90°, allowing for precise adjustment of the detection zone. Additionally, the detection zone can be customized using the provided shrouds, providing flexibility to tailor the sensor to specific needs. The housing of the IS 140-2 is made of UV-resistant plastic, ensuring durability and longevity even in outdoor environments. Moreover, the response value luminosity ranges from 2 to 2000 lx, allowing for adaptable performance based on ambient light conditions. Installation of the IS 140-2 is quick and straightforward, with the option to wire it up and mount it to the wall or corner. Corner wall mounts are available as accessories, further simplifying the installation process. Overall, the Steinel Motion Sensor IS 140-2 Black offers a combination of advanced features, customizable settings, and ease of installation, making it an excellent choice for enhancing security and convenience in any environment.

German quality - but don't last forever, a diagnostic tip that might save you time
These Steinel units work much better than the retail sheds' PIR's, which are cheaply made in China and pack up after a couple of years (typically by latching permanently on). I've ended up using about a dozen to replace old PIR's as they fail, and can vouch for their superior quality and reliability. However they too can fail eventually, in which case you simply swap round a new identical 140-2 PIR head onto the old base, reconnecting Live In, Neutral, Last Load Live Out on the internal connnector "choc bloc".... obviously disconnecting the mains supply before undertaking any electrical work. I have had a couple fail in the same way after about 5 years. This is cycling on and off every 30-45 seconds, with no heat source activation. This means your light will stay on permanently if there is any sort of time set on the unit. Disconnecting the PIR head and seeing if the Live In and Live Out wires offer no resistance on a multimeter (ie light always on) will not reveal the problem....the PIR has to be connected to the mains for this cycling to occur. I discovered this on an installation featuring 5 PIR's acting as a single network driving 5 floodlights all together via a relay, where the floodlights ended up after many years all on permanently. I ended up having to take each PIR head off in turn, using a simple rig to check which PIR head was the offender, as pictured. The malfunctioning PIR head, with both knobs turned fully clockwise for the "walk test", seemingly functioned perfectly. However if you then stayed out of range, the PIR head would start cycling, showing it was the one to replace.

Caution - Steinel use black wire for Live, not the brown wire (which is Switched live)
I have installed many, and also own several, Steinel products but this product - the IS 140 - confuses many electricians. This is not a complaint or criticism but simply a warning to others who may follow normal best practice (eg our NVQ training!) and use brown wire for Live and find the product fails! I seen two versions and this is how it should be wired (note, there is no PE Earth) … UK version: Black - Live feed (from power) Blue - Neutral Brown - Switched Live (to lights) or EU Version (sold here on Amazon - just bought two this week) Black - Live feed (from power) Blue - Neutral PURPLE - Switched Live (to lights) … Here’s the Issue … it’s not just the swapped use of the brown wire by Steinel that’s confusing, but just over two decades ago before the UK aligned to the EU, red was live and black Neutral. Standard were set to prevent black ever being used in a way that might confuse with its old use. Today, brown is always the primary live feed. In other multi-core cables, where there are black wire, brown is the first live, then black will a switched live (or perhaps ‘common’ in switching or L2 in multi phase feeds). You get the idea … Steinel haven’t! Little wonder, then, that one the best sparkys I know tested an IS 140 every which way going but just didn’t occur to him that the black could possibly be the live feed! The irony is the old UK use of the black coloured wires was ditched for German-led EU standard and Steinel is one of Germany’s oldest and finest electrical manufacturers. PS If Steinel read this my suggestion, respectfully would be to, first of all, MAKE YOUR INSTRUCTIONS CLEARER - both printed and online - they really are very poor (tried to be oversimplified for a multi-language leaflet) and do the following: Brown - Live feed (from power) Blue - Neutral Grey - Switched Live (to lights) And then make instructions for replacing like-for-like very clear too (because thousands of these existing devices will have brown connected as switched live, so it will need a warning).

Good product but range exaggerated
This is a good product and works well, but we have not been able to make it register us at the 12 m range as claimed. More like 8-10 meters. Easy to adjust the settings though and seems good quality. It was fitted by an electrician so cannot comment on the ease of fitting. Update: We have now managed to extend the range - it is important to get the angle just right as the IR beam emitted seems to be flattish. I think we had the sensor pointing too low so that it hit the ground too soon. It does now light up at 12m range.

Undecided
I'm a fan of Steinel PIRs, having found several to be very reliable. I have a very challenging application, my car at about 12m with traffic behind at about 17m. I've been using the Steinel IS2180-5 which is user selectable for 8m or 20m range not totally successfully on either range. Thought I would try this, its claimed 14m range seemed about perfect for the application. It's tilt and turn functionality is useful in optimising coverage. I would say its slightly more effective than the IS2180-5 but I still can't get the range I want without picking up moving traffic. I didn't read the other reviews until I had installed it. I agree with all the critical comments, The colour coding of the Live and switched Live wires is confusing. The sticky shrouds are inflexible compared with the adjustable shrouds of the IS2180-5. The pictogram instructions are poor, the range diagram is extremely poor compared with the IS2180-5 instructions. I noticed the 5mm drill but it didn't register what it was for. I'm unclear whether it is essential for drainage or is it for pressure equalisation. Does drilling the hole affect the IP rating? Does drilling the hole admit insects? No mention in the instructions of the two white oval things in the box. Possibly most disappointing feature is the lux and time adjustment. Not precision adjustment with a screwdriver but a strange thumb friction adjustment I've never seen before. Much happier with internal adjustments, once set shouldn't need to be changed. Steinel has really disappointed me with the IS 140-2. Of course the proof is in the pudding and if reliable will redeem itself. I'm keeping it as it is up and working but might not have purchased if I'd read the reviews first.

Sensor zelf was goed.
Helaas,40jaar terug is de schakeldraad gebruikt als aarde draad in een eerdere verdeeldoos en daardoor verkeerd aangesloten en kortsluiting gemaakt en kon niet gebruiken.
