Consise knowledge useful for everyone in the family

My kids don't have behaviour problems per se, but they do act out, particularly after "junk food" or even food with lots of carbs. I noticed this particularly because my kids seemed to act up more at certain times at school, home, etc. than at other times, and always after junk food! I had thought I was doing generally well feeding my kids healthy options; I used whole-grains, I didn't buy soda and potato chips... What an eye-opener. We really get fooled by "healthy" labels, while we're feeding our kids preservatives and other chemicals that actually have a physical affect on their (and our) body and brain functions! This book (in plain english, not doctor-scientist gibberish language) explains how proteins, fats and amino acids are made, utilized, etc., how our bodies (and brains) are meant to process foods and how certain sugars, carbs, glutens, preservatives, etc. interefere with that natural process in a negative way. This book was very easy to read and to understand. My review is probably more confusing than the book :) It very easily explained how AND WHY these foods (mainly processed foods) affect the way we feel and behave, our energy levels, etc. I liked the "SICK 16" list of the 16 most harmful food ingredients to look for on labels. I made a cheat sheet for myself and the babysitter, and used this at the grocery store. I typically shop at grocery stores that are more associated with "healthy, natural foods" and was surprised to see that about half of their selections had "bad" ingredients in them. But not to scare you, I also found that the other half of the selection didn't contain the bad stuff. You just need to know what you're looking for. For example, of the peanut butter options at my favorite store, I now automatically know which are the good ones, and which to avoid-- and they weren't the ones that I thought they'd be just based on the front label. The first couple trips to the store after reading this book did take awhile because I had so many back labels to read, but once I got the hang of it, it was no problem. To enforce things at home, at first I used stickers on all the foods in the fridge and pantry, so the kids knew exactly what they could eat a lot of vs. what they could eat only with permission and in moderation. Green sticker=good, go for it! Yellow=only in moderation, sometimes food. And Red=bad, lots of chemicals, don't eat. Once we got used to that system I am happy to say that there were no more foods in my house that required "Red" stickers, and my kids know which ones would be a yellow or green, so I don't need the stickers anymore. With all of the connections scientists (and parents) are finding between gluten, dyes, preservatives, etc. with Autism, ADHD, and ADD, I think this is valuable information for everyone to atleast consider when feeding their children.

Another great book from the Sears family

My wife and I are already over half way done with this book. Similar to other books written by the Sears (especially the Vaccine Book) this book is easy to read yet very informative. The book includes great recipe suggestions for all meals. We especially enjoy the "brainy breakfasts" recipes. Our little boy (14 months) has had problems with constipation ever since he began the slow transition to solids. After reading some of the recipes we tried Dr. Sears "Stool-aid/School-aid" smoothie (pg. 182) and our boy's bowels immediately improved and we haven't had had problems since we've been drinking it.The book's information regarding the dangers of food additives and substitutes currently out on the market helps parents make wise and informed decisions about what food to offer their children. It also explains how children's nutrition directly affects the way they act. This is a book we will be sad to see end. The information is great for everyone young and old. We could all learn a little more about how to eat well and especially how to teach the up and coming generations the same.
