Too vigorous flushing by a grandparent perhaps? Anyway, it did break and hence I purchased this item as a replacement. It was easy enough to fit, and the multiple holes meant I could choose which one worked best in our cistern. The only issue I had was the screw to tighten this component onto the handle spindle was difficult to tighten - the plastic hole for it is too narrow.
