Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman ( Being John Malkovich , Adaptation ) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind , a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. -- Bret Fetzer Charlie Kaufman, writer of the cult film 'Being John Malkovich', returns with another mind-bendingly inventive and unconventional plotline, this time driving a tender romantic comedy. Jim Carrey stars as Joel, a shy oddball who is stunned to discover that his longterm girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet), with whom he has recently split up, has undergone an experimental psychiatric treatment to have her memories of their tumultuous relationship erased. Still in love with her, and frustrated at the thought that she has no memory of their times together, he elects to undergo the procedure himself, and contacts the company who have pioneered it. The team, led by Dr Howard Mierzwaik (Tom Wilkinson), hook Joel up their computer and begin the process. The film, the majority of which takes place inside Joel's mind, then follows each of his memories of Clementine back in time as the most recent ones are systematically erased. But Joel's subconscious struggles to hold on to the memories as they slip away, and one of the nurses, Mary (Kirsten Dunst), who has undergone the treatment herself, sees his distress and eventually decides to send Joel and Clementine their files so that they know what they have lost. Review: A Compelling Masterpiece... - There's just too many good things about 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' to mention, it's hard to fit into one line. To be honest, the first time I saw this film, I was quite baffled, confused and didn't understand most of it at all - which was inevitably what brought me back to watching it again and again... and again. A first impression of the film title basically gives you an idea of what sort of film this is - "hmm, don't understand that"/"what does that mean?"/"spotless mind...wuh?". To understand the real enigma of this film is to really feel emotionally involved with the story and the characters. If you put yourself in the position of Joel or Clementine, for instance (and also with the help of some breathtaking acting by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet), you will feel like you are actually in the shoes of the character. The script touches brilliance in imagination and originality from start to finish. It's visually stunning, but no special effects... just plain simple movie magic. It's clever, funny, sad and thought-provoking, much like most films screenwritten by Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich), and has a European wit and creativity from the direction of French director Michel Gondry. It's a piece of art. 'Eternal Sunshine' is a Romantic/Comic/Fantasy love story. It's about a couple (Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynski) who are in a struggling relationship, and Clementine decides to erase her memory of Joel, as does Joel of Clementine afterwards. The cast all give fantastic performances. It's almost completely told in reverse order, and there's a lot of changing around as the audience is taken into a journey of Joel Barish's mind... If you're not into films that make you think and talk about for days afterwards with your friends... well, you simply don't like films. This is a classic example of a great film doing just that. To be honest, I would be working on my coursework instead of writing this review if it wasn't that good of a film - but it most certainly is, and I just need to boast the brilliance, the beauty, the celestial dreamlike charm and grace, and why it needs everyone's attention. Yeah, i was touched... Review: Eternal pleasure - Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's better-received Being John Malkovich was an amusing but cold oddity; director Michel Gondry's Science of Sleep was not particularly amusing and sickly cute. Sandwiched between was this loving, subtly cautionary romantic 'dramedy' about a young man, Joel (Jim Carrey), undergoing a fantastical scientific operation to remove all memory of his ex-girlfriend, the eccentric Clementine (Kate Winslet). The procedure draws him deep into his subconscious, and we're invited along for the ride. This second collaboration between Kaufman and Gondry (after 2001's Human Nature) has deservedly become something of a cult favourite. Forget Garden State: while Eternal Sunshine shares a desire to explore the truth behind the human condition through a skewed fish-eye lens, it is mercifully free of that film's cloying sentimentality, its narcissism, and its contempt for a mainline predefined as banal. In Garden State, people are kooky but phoney, shallow and self-absorbed; Eternal Sunshine's Joel, meanwhile, is powerless against his absorption into the strange fearful passions of his dreams. With impressive psychological literacy, Kaufman and Gondry's film shows us the selfishness of human desire and are - crucially - critical of it. Hollywood loves nothing more than to make lovers of ill-suited characters thrown together by circumstance. Not so here: the joy of watching Joel and Clementine's relationship blossom - and fade - is that it is a product of choice as much as chance, and so it is believable. Winslet puts in a signature performance; her Clementine is the extrovert to Carrey's Joel. Carrey, meanwhile, scribbles out his signature entirely: nary a mug passes across his face. His is a soulful turn of poise and intelligence. Eternal Sunshine finds its home on DVD - by the third or fourth viewing you should have the fractured narrative pretty much sussed. Plus, it's ideal night-in viewing: warm, friendly, funny, and profound. In a cynical and ironic era, it's heartening to watch a film that finds love so alive and so precious. A classic.

Spotless? No, but nearly flawless.
It's complicated.... no, that's another film! Eternal Sunshine (Of The Spotless Mind) is not a film you watch to unwind to; which is what I did one evening and by the time the opening credits had passed by no more than ten minutes I was lost (it has an unusually long intro of some seventeen minutes). At the end of the film I thought, " What was that all about?".... but I'd missed the point. It is a very clever film that requires your full attention or you just don't get it. I watched it again, this time more awake, and found it fascinating. Still with the odd moment of confusion but I thoroughly enjoyed it and will gladly watch it again. Kate Winslet is brilliant - wacky, brash and in your face but ultimately wonderful. Jim Carey is really very good as the more serious partner and he narrates the juxtaposed events; the other cast members admirably support the story also. There's a great twist at the end, which finishes the film very well and, all in all (without trying to précis the scenario complexities) the film is very well worth watching. Complicated.... yes, clever.... definitely, enjoyable.... certainly (unless you're a bit too relaxed), worth watching.... without a doubt. In the end it's almost flawless, if not eternally radiant, and I loved it!

A masterpiece of truth
This is a romantic comedy that dares to be true about the nature of romance - that, after the initial whizz-bang-wows of the first few weeks we do lapse into routine and often that routine begins to grate on us and the little things we liked so much to begin with end up being the things we grate our teeth at. But it is not cynical, nor is it bleak or downhearted. It is a wonderful celebration of love, both the good and the bad parts, and as such is the most realistic and daring depiction of love I have seen in an American movie. Carrey is excellent, refusing to gurn and goon around and playing it straight. Kate Winslet is wonderful - she steals the film with her charming, crazy, gloriously oddball character and I have to say, like Carrey's character, I fell in and out of love with her a hundred times. We've all known a relationship like this and that's what makes this film so special - it rings so true that, despite the premise being rather sci-fi in origin, it has the warmest, most human of hearts and unless your blood runs somewhere close to zero degrees, you cannot help but love this movie. You come away thinking of the one who got away and what could have been, and perhaps still what could be. The script is perfect, not one false note or wrong move. The direction is fast and smooth, and you get the feeling from scene one that you are in the hands of natural storytellers. Quite easily the best film of the new millennium so far. Treat yourself and click "Buy".

a pretty nice film
a pretty nice film, visuals are simply great, with good performances by both leading actors. Has a nice plot, and I think you'll like it by buying it, if you're already interested

Just superb.
One of the most interesting films i've seen for a while, i found this Charlie Kaufmans most satisfying film to date. Clearly obsessed with getting inside the human mind, in Eternal sunshine he plays with a whole host of ideas based around the conscious / sub-conscious interface, and its clever and simple, in a way that Adaptation wasnt. For those not convinced by Jim Carey's trademark clowning, as a presence he is virtually not there in Eternal Sunshine. In fact Carey communicates the choking desperation of the situtation he finds himself in really well, and is relatively subdued throughout.. The relationship with Kate Winslett also works fine, but its the dazzling visual presentation of Michel Gondry that makes the film work so well. Often superflous, the art-pop video playing with images is convincingly used throughout, and particulalry during the closing sequence of the film as Careys memory unravels before his eyes, and is close to genius. Its stunning, and more in the way that it pushes the narrative along, than simply its art school wizardry. The suport adds some weight too, with Kirsten Dunst and Mark Ruffalo engaging throughout. Not a film to zone out to, i found this had a sadness and tragedy that was quite moving , yet uplifting. Cant think of any better reviewed films this year.

Fate? Forgiveness?
The film's idea of "erasing" a person from your memory is such a clever device for exploring personality, inevitablity, love, and pain. Characters seem to re-enact the very things - the very relationships - they have tried to escape from into the oblivion of forgetting. But life is not so simple, and the plot shows not only how horrific it would be to simply erase a person - and all that goes with them - from your mind, but also shows how one might easily enter the same loop again. Would this be to make the same mistakes again? Perhaps. Does that mean you should not risk intimacy, in case it goes wrong (again)? If so, perhaps we would never try to get to know - let alone love - anyone. Or can one face the possibility of pain, and take the risk? Eternal Sunshine made me think about that, and I'm glad it did. Great movie.

Berührt Herz und Kopf
Von dem Moment an, als ich 2004 in Neuseeland das Filmplakat zu dem Film gesehen habe, wollte ich den Film sehen. Schon der Satz "You can erase someone from your heart - but can you also erase someone from your mind?" hat mich berührt.
