Q: bought as a present and there are no instructions on how to read it apparantly. can anyone explain

These barometers work on air pressure, so when the air pressure is high (good weather) the water level in the barometer is low and when the air pressure is low, indicating bad or stormy weather, the water level is high. Sometimes the water will overflow into the tray and just needs to be wiped out with kitchen towel. Sometimes the glass needs topping up and this is done quite easily with a syringe. It only needs to be filled to about half capacity to be effective. Hope this helps.

Q: I have tried colouring the water with food dye but the colour fades away completely. Any better suggestions?

Yes, there are several different makes of dye powder. The one I used came in a sachet and I used about a teaspoonful of it. Seemed to do the trick.

Q: has anyone got a barometer where the spout indicator is the opposite to what the instructions are like mine?

In that when fair the water rises and when wet it falls? If yes mine does... I think the empty part in the chamber above the water is reacting to the extreme heat we've had.

Q: Need a new hook - any ideas?

As metal frame has drilled holes to secure to wood or rawl plug backing you could get small hook ... £ - land etc to insert through original hook hole to secure into backing and hang glass on to. Hope this makes sense for just a few pence
