This SDR uses the E4000 tuner instead of the R820T2 tuner utilized in the NESDR SMArt (black). In brief, this means a frequency capability of about 65MHz-2300MHz as opposed to the 25MHz-1700MHz capability of the NESDR SMArt. The frequency response (sensitivity) is also different, but is generally better on the NESDR SMArt XTR (silver) below about 500MHz and above about 1500MHz. You are correct, for HF, we recommend using the Ham It Up. Most other products which claim to be capable of HF frequencies use what is known as 'direct sampling', which results in very poor to poor HF performance. As such, we have not implemented these features in our SDRs at this time.
