First of all they don't block out all sound, you will still hear a snoring partner lying next to you, just half as loud. Where this product excels is in it's muffling or blocking of ambient sounds such as the normal outdoor sounds during the day when you are trying to sleep (I often work nights) kids going to school, bin men, my noisy family downstairs, that sort of thing. Also noisy hotels, buses, planes etc. They are also good at protecting your hearing at very loud concerts or movies, if you're a bit sensitive to that level of noise. With practice they are easy to insert.
