An instructive, valuable resource for any producer or recording engineer!
Mike Senior has consistently been one of the very best sources of instructive and actionable pro-level advice for music production, for many years. This book is phenomenally useful (especially for home studio producers like me!) for newcomers and experienced people alike. Even with experience, you can open the book at a random page and find a gem. One of the things that I find particularly useful, is the pedagogical approach to recording that brings pro-level principles and techniques to the real world of home studio life. If like me you don’t have access to a cupboard filled with expensive microphones, and you’re recording at home or even renting a studio for a session (lucky you!), then following the book will really make the difference in your recording quality. I record a lot of vocals, acoustic guitar and piano, and I found with some tweaks to mic placement and following other advice in the book, my recordings are coming out a LOT better. The quotes from interviews with industry leading professionals make a really good learning device. It's a scientific way of presenting ideas, and backing them up by referencing real-world industry techniques used by the big names, and that we hear on all our favourite CDs/streaming services/Sony Walkman. Walkman? Walkmen? Walkpeople? Erm… The online resources are fantastically useful, I thoroughly recommend this book and the library of audio files available to supplement it. Reading is one thing, but implementing what you learn in stages allows you to really get the techniques ‘under your fingers’. Also the print quality of the book is great! Everything is nicely laid out, with longer-read sections for deep dives on acoustic/recording principles, digestible 'Cut to the Chase' summary sections, and images and diagrams to expand on critical topics where necessary. I might be getting a bit nerdy here; but everything down to the binding/spine choices are on point. Let me explain what I mean... Some books are too stiff to lay open on the desk without the book trying to close itself, and others can be too big to hold comfortably when sitting on a train (or other vehicle!) and reading. This book is spot on for both situations! Highly recommend this book, think of it as a very valuable investment in your music!
