Cole & Mason 505 Clear Salt and Pepper Mills, Adjustable Grind Precision+ Mechanism, Acrylic, 140 mm, Gift Set, Includes 2 x Salt and Pepper Grinders

We had owned a Cole and Mason salt and pepper mill set for many years but they were showing signs of wear and tear after almost daily use throughout; when the pepper grinder finally gave-up on us, we wanted new ones. To be honest, we didn't even consider other brands, so to find these at a reasonable price made this purchase a no-brainer for us. The order arrived quickly and was well packaged. The grinders themselves are very good quality and look elegant - they are not so big as to be ostentatious (about 13cm tall). In use, they work very well - grind size is easily adjustable (see the video in the description). There is a small amount of rock salt and black pepper in the grinders to start you off - this will probably last a few weeks (be aware that pre-ground salt and pepper does not work in grinders like these). Apparently, the grinder units are guaranteed for life which is a nice touch and shows the confidence that the manufacturer places in its product. Very highly recommended.

My last set of salt and pepper mills were mislaid when I took them on holiday. These are great and coming ready filled which I wasn't expecting.

These are attractive and functional salt and pepper mills. I'm not sure what material they're made out of, but I think it's some sort of plastic—it doesn't seem like actual glass. My main gripe with them is that the knobs at the top have a tendency of coming loose and falling off when grinding. Especially if you're going for a coarser grind ie having the knobs looser in the first place, but even when I fully tighten the knobs, they loosen during grinding to the point of flying off sometimes. Overall I'm happy with them and they do the job.

Excellent salt and pepper mills.

Having brought a grinder some months ago and finding it no good, my daughter gave me one of hers. Needless to say that was equally as useless as the one I had just dismantled and sent off to recycling with this one following one behind. She also had a Cole and Mason which she demonstrated by twisting it a couple of times. Instant ground snow hit the table and the noise from it sounded like a grinder at work. A really grinder and a proper grinder. If you turn it over you can see that the strap along the bottom holding the grinding parts together is made from steel along with the grinding cogs. Yes! Steel! Real steel. Hardened steel made for grinding. Not plastic like the two I have just sent to the recycling centre. Most of the grinders we had looked at were made from plastic with plastic grinding surfaces and are not up to the job and wear out remarkably quickly. But the Cole Mason grinder I brought is made properly like it used to be in the good old days. The grinder I originally brought cost just under £7.00, so 2 for £15.00 is not expensive. I grind Black Himalayan salt which is Pink Himalayan to which spices have been added and then taken up to a high temperature. It's a bit like grinding coke or coal and if not ground sufficiently smooth leaves the over riding and dominant taste of salt. I am very pleased with my order and the fact that it was delivered on time and post free. They also come part-filled with pepper corns and rock salt. I could not be happier!

I am embarrassed to say I have only just learned how to adjust the grind. I have had these for 5 years and they still work perfectly. The only problem I had was the salt grind was too big. I came onto Amazon to look for a replacement but decided to check my purchase history and look at the listing again in case I missed some instructions. Sure enough I had and after watching the video, immediately went to the kitchen and viola, lovely finely ground salt (you tighten the top screw, then whole of the top section to compress the big internal screw inside the grinder at the bottom for finer grind) Feel a bit silly but if it helps others that I’ve seen in reviews not have the chunky salt problem, it’s worth outing myself as daft. WATCH THE VIDEO at the top of the listing, it’s much better than my clumsy explanation.

These are well made and look good, easy to refill. The salt and pepper you get with the product is good too It only received a 4 star as the grind on it for the salt is too large and you end with lumps of salt, which can be a little much, even when you tighten the grind. Other than that a good set

The pepper grinder is good but the salt is absolutely rubbish, it hardly grinds the salt at all so you end up with big chunks of rock salt on your food and now the screw top that holds the lid on has corroded so I can't screw it back on and it can no longer be used and I'm on the hunt for another one. Very disappointing especially for a reputable brand like Cole & Mason.
