## Description

From the manufacturer MDISC Verbatim MDISC is the new standard in digital storage, designed for storing and protecting your files. Your data is burned into a stone-like storage layer that is resistant to light, temperature and moisture. Millenniata tests to industry standard ISO/IEC 10995 showed that the expected lifetime of an MDISC DVD is 1,332 years and only 5% of disks will show signs of data loss after 667 years. The expected service life is therefore several hundred years. So you can be absolutely sure that your precious photographs, music libraries, medical documents and other important data will be stored on a storage device that will last a lifetime. Product details Disk customisation – printable Verbatim printable discs feature an inkjet printable surface. So you can customise the surface of the blank with the help of selectable motifs. Review: Keep precious digital information - Works nicely with my internal Pioneer BDR-213EBK and Brun Aware software on Windows 11. It takes my PC about 3 hours to right a disk full and the same again to verify. I have written to 10 disks so far with out a single failure and it is nice knowing I have the surety of not losing precious digital pictures, music and hobby info
Review: MDisc BDXL that does what it should! - I bought these to backup the data I cannot afford to lose in a virus, malware or ransomware attack. Bought from desertcart EU, and each disc is shrink wrapped and all barcodes match Verbatim's website. I saw concerns about scratches in the inner ring and burn failures so I was concerned given the price. While the scratches are definitely there, they're in the inner ring where the 3 serial numbers (1 per layer) are, so nothing is written there and they don't impact quality. The discs are identified as MID: VERBAT-IMk-000, which verifies on the BluRay site as HTL (High-to-low Inorganic) BDR V3.0. Burned with a Pioneer BDR-XD05T drive from Aug 2014 (which has no claim to support MDisc on it, but works because MDisc adheres to all BluRay standards). Used ImgBurn (from a mirror site to avoid the Adware from the genuine site) and created a 100GB ISO Image (Mode1/2048 using ISO9660+Joliet+UDF with UDF 1.50). My first disc image contained 25,180 files in 595 folders totalling 92,368,211,531 bytes. I also MD5 summed each file and saved the checksums to the BD as well. It took 26 minutes to create the image on the local disc, then I burned at 2x speed for safety which took 2 hours 55 minutes, then 1hr 31 minutes to verify the disc to the ISO. I also verified all MD5sums after the disc had cooled off which tool another 2 hours 32 minutes. Both the ImgBurn and the MD5Sum file verifications were good. The discs show up as 90.2GB in Windows, but that is because of the difference in units i.e. GB vs GiB. In short, I am happy that these Discs are as described and when burned at 2x speed, have no failures. I would say ignore the "you don't get 100GB", the "scratches on the inner ring" and "burn failure" reviews on here. My opinion is that those reviews come from misunderstandings about the tech and probably burning directly without using ISO first. I will be buying more of these again. As to whether they last longer than standard BD-XL or whether I should be using single layer 25GB MDiscs, only time will tell. I'll probably check the MD5 sums once evert couple of years to ensure the backups are still valid and take more/move files to a new disc if there are issues.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can you burn photos from apple mac iphoto to these discs please?**
A: Hi Angela, I cannot give you a definite answer to this as I’ve never used Apple hardware. However, if you can burn your iPhotos to normal DVD’s then it’s likely you’ll be able to burn to M-discs as long as your hardware recognises M-discs and as long as your burning software also recognises M-discs. I purchased an external ASUS ZenDrive to use on my PC running XP and it was recognised OK. I then loaded my Ashampoo burning software and it also recognised I’d loaded an M-disc. Both my hardware and software are quite old. Check the age of both your hardware and software and if after the introduction of M-discs then you will probably be OK - but I can’t promise. Note that the ASUS drive came bundled with a couple of DVD M-discs so I was able to test these worked before buying a pack of M-discs. Also note that M-discs are available for both DVD and Blue Ray - decide which you want first. You are probably best contacting Apple support and checking with them.

**Q: Am i able to copy all my photos and videos onto this from my pc and still access them like a sd or hdd want perment storage of my files?**
A: These discs behave much like ordinary DVDs, but they re made of material that does not degrade over time. Most DVDs use a dye base that will eventually fade. These discs actually engrave the data on a silicate type base. The current makers simple claim a very long life, but early tests show that these could last for a thousand years. Of course we have to hope that people a thousand years hence will know how to access the data, but certainly is should be safe for a considerable time. Much longer than dye based discs. They can be used on a standard blue ray drive to both write and read

**Q: Can theses be used on all lu ray writers**
A: They can be read on nearly all blu ray drives but you need an M Disc capable drive to burn them. Most drives have an M Disc logo on tray if they're capable but check full spec as some may only burn M Disc DVD.

**Q: Can anyone advice me on another type of disc that can store my photos and videos for years and years while still being able to read delete view etc**
A: You could try Verbatim DataLifePlus.

This is what Verbatim has to say about the different types of disc:
Unlike traditional optical media, which utilize dyes that can break down over time, data stored on an M DISC is engraved on a patented inorganic write layer – it will not fade or deteriorate. This unique engraving process renders these archival grade discs practically impervious to environmental exposure, including light, temperature and humidity.

To be honest I'm only using the M Disc to archive items that I deem important and irreplaceable, e.g. a collection of photos I've scanned, video footage captured on HDV mini tapes, and also Super 8mm film that I had digitised.

My hobby is creating home movies and sharing these with family and friends on DVDs. I have used 'ordinary' DVDs for a this purpose over a number of years (18 or more), and have not known of any failures over this time period.

In my experience DVDs fail at the recording stage or not at all. I do store them in DVD cases, so perhaps protecting from direct sunlight when not being used helps.

I also find the DataLifePlus discs are ideal. These have something Verbatim calls AZO recording dye which supposedly optimizes read/write performance. I can't comment on that, nut what I can say is that I have had M Discs fail when recording to them, but I've never had DataLifePlus disc fail, either during recording or later when accessing the disc again. That's not to say they can't fail, just that I have never experienced it.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Worked well in an Asus Blu-ray Writer.
*by A***S on 2 March 2025*

Worked great in my Asus blu-ray disk writer. They are in a standard CD case with a printable and writeable disk label. I used Sharpie permanent marker to write on mine. They are reported to have a 1000 year life but someone else will have to report back in that feature!
