Motors for Makers: A Guide to Steppers, Servos, and Other Electrical Machines

Bought this for my husband who is a mad keen model engineer. He was delighted with it, full of useful information. Said it was better than he expected it to be.

I found this a great asset to finding out info needed to make a cnc wood lathe. Great book.

An interesting and useful book which fulfills the promise of its title. The motors of the title are electric motors while the makers the book is intended for are those who wish to make sensible choices of motors for their projects without perhaps feeling, at this point, a need for the depth of understanding of an engineer or scientist. The book may be divided into three sections - though I am not speaking of the author's subdivision of his chapters. The first section provides an overview of the many different kinds of motors and the electronics needed to drive them, the second section discusses three different kinds of microcontroller (Arduino Mega, Raspberry Pi and Beaglebone Black) and how they can conveniently be used to control motors using common accessories and the third section discusses three specific applications (an electronic speed controller for the Arduino, a remote control quadcopter and full size electric vehicles). Well organized and useful.

Excellent book. Read a few pages on the look inside section and bought it - I wasn't disappointed.

This is a gentle introduction to how electric motors work. It's not detailed, but it's enough for the hobbyist. A far more in depth book called Electric Motors and Drives written by Austin Hughes and Bill Drury, really gets to grips with all types of motors, but, it doesn't talk about interfacing with Raspberry Pis or Arduinos unfortunately. My main disappointment with this book is that whilst the author talks about how to control both the RPi and the Arduino, there are no circuit diagrams, so if you're a novice you would not know which wire to connect to what. There are also no colour photos, and the whole book is printed on thin(ish) paper with grey diagrams a la the "Dummies for" books. Not dreadful, but no worth buying.

Me ha gustado mucho... muy completo, con capitulo final para transformaciones de coches... francamente útil e interesante. Lamentable que siendo el segundo lenguaje del mundo no tenga edición en Español.

L'ho acquistato per approfondire l'utilizzo dei motori stepper e devo dire che questi vengono trattati molto bene. Gli esempi di utilizzo con Arduino sono interessanti, anche se avrei preferito qualche citazione pratica in più.

Aun no lo termino y ya comprendo bastante de la teoría detrás de la mecatronica en los drones, impresoras 3D y CNC, etc. Es una explicación muy amena entre practica y conceptos.

Excellent entry book in the world of motors.

Good book for understanding basics of motors without too much of equations and vectors.
