101 Ways to Win at SCRABBLE™: Top tips for SCRABBLE™ success (Collins Little Books)

I bought this for a friend who has become addicted to Scrabble during the Covid lockdown - addiction might sound like a strong word but I think it is fair!! She loves this book and it has given her loads of ideas. Of particular use have been the lists of words. Two letter words are very useful in Scrabble and there is a big list of them here. She now plays a more more tactical game and is winning more than she was previously.

A present for my wife, who is a scrabble nut. Keeps getting beaten by her friend, so this was a well-received gift. She's found it easy to use and great to put into practice. It gets her recommendation.

This review is for "101 Ways to Win at Scrabble", by Barry Grossman, 2nd Edition, published by Collins in 2017. This, like its companion "Scrabble Secrets" by Mark Nyman, is definitely worth a read. In fact, reading one, having read the other, may help reinforce what you learn from each, since there is a considerable overlap, not least in the lists of 2- and 3-letter words in the final section. The word lists now come with definitions, which I personally feel is a help to remembering them. This volume has a table of contents, which it places at the back (pp213ff) and calls an index (which it isn't in modern usage) but is useful nevertheless. The fact that the book now has page numbers is also very useful. Grossman is to the point, and presents his tips in 101 easy to read, short and very useful nuggets. He is never patronising, which is nice. There are many tips I might never have come to by myself - or at least not quickly - and do feel that his little book could be a big help towards being a better Scrabble player. If only it would learn it all for me as well! 4 Stars because he put the table of contents at the back, and on first opening the book at random (at page 19) was told that EAUX is the plural of EUA - are there more of these gems? I shall find out as I read. Otherwise, a good buy.

Brilliant little book to carry around to learn scrabble words!

Excellent for Scrabble newbies and those requiring a few additional tips.

This book has definitely improved my Scrabble scores but it's also a fun read. It would make an excellent gift for anyone who wants to improve their game.

Being new to Scrabble, the on-line version against a computer is perfect for me. I worked out a few strategies as being obvious as I started to play and quickly realised there is a specific Scrabble language that no-one else in their right mind uses (and I am often teased about the large personal dictionary I use). This little book helps understand some of thee strategies and groups of words which are helpful in the competitive game. Definitely helps with brain training and increases the fun element.
