Fabulous food
Wonderful recipes for the keen cook but quite a lot of effort. Does Marcus Wareham's family really eat like this, I wondered? Are they strangers to egg and chips and beans on toast? How elegant! There are a handful of recipes I would be willing to attempt myself, when I have someone to impress or am blessed with extra time but on the whole, this is a bit high-falutin' for me. More a commentary on my laziness than on Marcus Wareing's recipes, really, but unless cooking is a real interest of yours, I'd suggest that these recipes are an occasional treat only.

Fantastic ginger cake
This is a fantastic cook book. We have previously used lots of Jamie Oliver cook books (30 mins, Superfood, etc.) but we wanted a little more variety. This cook book does assume that you are a little more competent (e.g. fewer detailed steps), however, the food is fantastic. So far we have cooked: Ginger Cake (extremely tasty), Lasagne (yummy), Pumpkin Soup, Banana French toast, Courgette risotto, Chicken curry, etc... All recipes are well planned and don't include too many ingredients. Most recipes are great for the weekend when you have a little more time. One small complaint is that the ingredient list include some preparation (e.g 1 onion chopped). I prefer it when recipe books include preparation in the flow of cooking. Highly recommend this book!

Great book for the experienced home cook
The book is great quality, has well written recipes and some great photos of the dishes. The ethos is all about great seasonal ingredients, so to re-create some of the recipes you need to be willing to track down the best produce. All in all you can get some great inspiration for midweek meals, weekend specials and dinner party treats. You might need use a bit more skill than you would your average '15 min meal' recipes , but the reward is worth the extra effort.

recipe measures and timings not always correct for the home cook
I am a competent home cook and appreciate opportunity to cook challenging yet nutritious, family friendly and tasty food at home. Marcus book is indeed inspiring and the recipes I have tried over the last 3 months since purchase have all tasted great....eventually! I have tried several recipes: fish pie and polenta chips being 2 examples. The cooking times and volume of fluids are not accurate. My advice is; don't expect perfect results first time. Have a go at the recipes when it isn't time crucial or important, and then you'll learn how to tweak them to make them work using your oven, hob and utensils. I don't trust the timings or fluid volumes in particular that are required in this book after several recipe attempts, and I certainly won't risk a recipe on a dinner party or other occasion that is time critical without testing the recipe first. If you want to rely on a recipe working first time then look to Delia - this cook book whilst great is not a first time reliable. Will I make the recipes again? Absolutely! They have all tasted great but I have had to do some rescuing and a lot of tweaking and on occasion abandoned the actual recipe and created something slightly different as it hasn't worked out despite my accurately following of timings and methods and ingredients. I have found this to be the case with several celebrity chef cook books (James Martin, Michel Roux etc,.) so this one is no exception. Persevere though and you will be rewarded with an excellent plate of food!

I've always been a fan of Marcus Wareing ever since he took over from Michel Roux jr on Master Chef. He had lost the arrogance (probably learnt under his time with Gordon Ramsey), by then and his later books have also shown a softening in that regard. This book is an absolute gem. I have hundreds of cook books, and as all avid collectors, we find ourselves going back time and time again to tried and tested recipes from our favourite ones. This book is certainly going to become a favourite. Yes there are a couple of drawn out recipes, with brining, marinating, and slow cooking involved, but none of the recipes are 'chefy', and the results so far are fabulous. Great Chef Great book. Totally recommend.

Be aware where your product comes from.
Don't order from this seller if you are in North America. It took 6 weeks to arrive from Ireland. Not acceptable in this day and age. Otherwise the product is excellent.
