Very effective at bringing down humidity levels quickly and economically.
Someone suggested to me that I get a dehumidifier to deal with the condensation problems in my old stone cottage where the damp was particularly bad (despite the walls being 'tanked') in one of the (downstairs) bedrooms - it's been a problem for years, especially in winter and our recent wet summers. Based on the mostly favourable reviews (and the reasonable price) of this dehumidifier, I thought I'd take a chance, but didn't expect miracles. Well, I was wrong - the machine's only been running on continuous for 1 day, and the full tank has been emptied four times, more than 8 litres in total in less than 24 hours. The back and side wall of the bedroom look transformed, and the musty smell of damp is quite gone already, the room smells lovely, fresh and clean which is an unexpected and welcome added bonus. I didn't think the machine was particularly noisy, certainly no more than a fridge, but then it is in a furnished room on carpeting. One thing that would be useful is to be able to monitor the humidity levels of the room in order to be able to adjust the dial setting of the dehumidifier to its most economical function, but a battery humidity monitor is cheap enough to buy separately. I am absolutely delighted with this dehumidifier, and my only regret is I didn't get one years ago. It doesn't run away with the electric either, and I should be able to save a bit on central heating because the dehumidifier is keeping the damp under control. The order was processed promptly, delivered quickly, and was all set up and ready to go after a 24 hour period of "settling" after delivery, and it's such a relief to be able to deal effectively with the condensation on mildewed cold stone walls, musty bedding and damp, stale air. Thank you. UPDATE: The machine has done such a good job I've invested in a second one for the upstairs, the cottage does get damp and fusty (with mildewed corners) especially in winter with wet dogs and people, and I've no doubt a second machine will be enough to keep the whole place sweet. I hadn't realised the cottage was running at over 80% relative humidity. No wonder the walls behind the furniture and in the corners got grey with mould spores from condensation, needing frequent cleaning with the mildew remover. I'd just learned to live with it. Now I've realised that I don't have to!! For a decent sized two bed cottage, one machine is adequate for one floor, but not quite man enough for two floors plus 'trouble spots.' The second machine should be well worth the investment, and won't need to be on continuously - when you look at the prices of a lot of compressor dehumidifiers, you're getting two of these for the price of one of a similar construction, so they seem to be pretty good value all round. UPDATE: June 2016. - Both these machines are still working very well and bringing humidity levels down from over 80% to 60 - 70% within a day, when weather conditions have caused a big rise. I don't have to use both machines - one is entirely fit for purpose now things are under control, and I only have to use the machine occasionally when the hygrometer starts to show a rise in the humidity levels. I haven't had any mildew on the 'cold' wall which is prone to condensation since I started using a dehumidifier, and no mildewing behind wardrobes either, which was another trouble spot. These De'Longhi machines have proved effective and reliable right from the outset.

DeLonghi DEM10
The Box When the Dehumidifier arrived I thought wow! This thing is enormous. That is just the box. It is well packaged and actually quite small. Imagine an egg the size of half a pillow (the ones you use for sleeping), but white in colour. It has a handle for carrying and it is not heavy at all. This product does not come from IKEA. No assembly required. Out of the box, it is good to go. There is a transparent pipe/hose supplied with the unit. This is for the OPTIONAL `continuous drain' function. Some people want to leave this unit ON 24 hours a day and don't want to keep emptying the water tank. What you do, is drill a hole in a wall and put the pipe there so it drips outside. Humidistat This unit has a humidistat. This means that if you set the dial to about half way, it will turn itself off when it feels that your room is dry. If you hang wet clothes on the radiator, it will sense the water and dry the air BEFORE condensation occurs on the windows. Sound I have a hard floor. I put a newspaper under the dehumidifier and that has dampened the vibrations completely. If you have carpet, then good for you, you don't need the newspaper. The sound of the compressor is a low hum... something like a fridge. For a dehumidifier, it is VERY QUIET... It is about as loud as the fans on your computer. I sleep with the dehumidifier on. Filter This unit has a filter. This is not disposable, don't throw it away. This is a good thing. The filter is similar to those you would find in an air-conditioning unit. It is a flexible plastic filter. Just run it under the shower or tap for 5 seconds to clean it. It is not made out of cloth/paper and will dry very very quickly. The filter is a GOOD thing. When it is clean it runs very efficiently. Without the filter, all the dust would block the heatsink/heat exchanger. So yes please use the filter and even if you don't clean the filter, it will still work (just not as well). Running costs The power consumption is 180watts. This is similar to two laptops or one and a half `normal light bulbs'. Because of the humidistat, it turns itself on and off when needed so it is never running 24hours a day (unless you set it to continuous). The power consumption itself is not much but think about the heating costs. When you open your window in winter the room goes cold. A LOT of gas/electricity/fuel is needed to heat the room again. This saves you from opening the window and losing heat in the process. Condensation This stops condensation. Condensation makes mold damage to the walls ceiling and window frames, water damage to walls, floors, walls and of course can cause some unlikely water damage eg: you put your phone/wallet by the window and now your phone is wet and broken ect... This product is 10 out of 10. Buy it.

Impressive and compact, with slight trade-offs
The DEM10 isn't the quietest dehumidifier you'll come across, but it's by no means the loudest. At 190W power consumption, a little bit of noise can be forgiven anyway. The top dial is a humidistat, and so you turn it to the (unmarked) humidity you want to achieve. Turning it to full sets the bar such that it's on constantly; about a third of the way seems to be a reasonable level. In a high-humidity environment, you'll quite easily fill up the two-litre tank within a few hours, and that's where one of my only issues lies. It's a shame that there wasn't a bigger tank on this, but then its relatively small size likely prohibits this. Of course, if you have it in a position where you can attach the drainage hose, you won't have this problem. But you have to make sure it drains downwards; you can't place the hose up into a bucket! Emptying the water is easy, with the bucket coming out of the front of the unit by pulling on both sides. Replacing it starts the unit back up again, and is also the way to reset the tilt switch if it's been tripped during transport. All in all, it's worked wonders in our house. It could be quieter (though if only the fan is running and not the coolant pump, it's near silent!) and the bucket could be bigger, but it's solidly built and saps out water at an impressive rate.

sensibly priced, good, reliable little product
I'd read generally positive reviews of this device before purchasing it, usually with some caveats such as the water capture tray is difficult to remove/re-fit, or the device doesn't switch off when it fills up. I've experienced none of this. Sure, the tray clunks into position - but I want that, it's reassuring. It's stopped every time it's got full and have removed a pleasing amount of water from the air so far. I can't say I've noticed a particular different in the humidity myself, but the proof of the pudding is no condensation on the windows which, in my bungalow, was driving me nuts. There's also no damp forming on the ceilings now, so I'm a big fan of this device. I've run it for a day or so in each room exclusively and now it sits on the hallway, with the doors ajar to generally lower the humidity in each room, as the manual advises. As a bonus, you can use the de-mineralised water it captures in your iron, without fear of limescale build-up! The controls are clear, the device is easy to use. If you're standing it on wooden flooring, it'll make more noise as it works that if it's cushioned slightly on carpet, but it's not too intrusive. I wouldn't claim to be able to sleep through it though! If you need a dehumidifier, just get this one. It's not outrageously-priced, and it's not those annoying crystal water trap things that need attention every week.

Very effective but not 'very quiet'
I bought this on recommendation from a friend that a dehumidifier would help with drying clothes indoors. Clothes were taking around a week to dry in a small room, and once dry, did not smell all that fresh. I was considering buying a tumble drier, but they turned out to be more expensive than I thought, and they also use a lot of electricity. I went with De'Longhi because I wanted a make I had heard of. I was impressed with the difference this dehumidifier made. After a few days of the tank filling itself a couple of times a day, clothes would take 36-48 hours to dry, in the same room they used to take a week. On top of that, the clothes actually smelt freshly laundered, which was great. After several weeks use, I found that not much water was being extracted, but clothes were still being dried quickly. The dehumidifier now serves to keep the overall humidity low, allowing clothes to dry quickly, but it does not need to be running that often to achieve this. I am particularly pleased with this result, as although the DEM10 does not use much power, only having to have it on once a week is great for convenience and power saving. Drying is aided by a cheap oscillating fan I had, which circulates the dry air of the room a lot better than the relatively weak built-in fan (which is not designed for this purpose anyway). The only downside with the item is that it is not 'very quiet' as stated in the description. Most of you will know that a dehumidifier is basically a fridge, with water condensing on the 'cold' part of the coolant loop. For this reason, I was expecting this item to be about as quiet as, if not quieter than my fridge-freezer. Perhaps there is something odd about my particular unit, but it is much louder than this. Basically the internal pump produces a low frequency droning, which, if the unit is on a wooden floor, is 'amplified' through the wood. I have it in the next room to the bedroom, and I wouldn't try to sleep with it running. For this reason I used a cheap mains timer plug, turning on only during the day. As in the end I don't need the dehumidifier running very often, and because it is so effective at drying clothes, I did not mark it down over the noise issue, which I assume is inherent to any coolant-loop based dehumidifier. I also think that if it were used on a concrete or similarly hard floor, it would be quiet enough, but still, I don't think, justifying being described as 'very quiet'.

Reasonably effective but performance can vary
It's been almost a month since the purchase of this De'Longhi DEM10 Dehumidifier and the unit has been used every night and occasionally through the daylight hours thereafter in a 2-bedroom apartment. Initial impressions are favourable; its first dehumidifying session removed a great deal of moisture from the air, virtually filling its water capture tank. The condensation on the windows in the morning had reduced to a narrow bead of sweat around the edges, as opposed to the usual soaked shower-door effect we had previously. As for noise, its not silent but we didn't find it especially intrusive - its a bit like having a desktop PC running all night long accompanied by the faint background hum of the condenser. To put it into perspective, I could clearly hear the trickle of water into the tank over the fan and motor noise. However, if you're used to morgue-silent nights, then you will be more sensitive to the sound. Placement of the unit is important as it doesn't uniformly dehumidify the entire atmosphere within the premises (which makes sense, if you think about it). We found that hallway placement with interior doors open was by far the most effective - particularly at the bedroom and bathroom end of the hall as that's where the moisture is generated through exhalation and ablutions. As the moistest air is tackled close to the source, the rest of the property benefits. Moving it away will reduce the noise, if it bothers you, but we found this results in more varied results. Experiment a little; if its not making much difference in one location, try another. Longer term use, even only for a month, has revealed a couple of things worth pointing out that have compromised what would have been a higher score than the 3-star "it's ok" rating I've awarded. The humidistat on the top of the unit could be more useful with a simple LCD display showing the relative humidity. It's not an expensive part and shouldn't push the cost of the unit up by more than a few pounds. The manual describes an initial "calibration" period, where one runs the machine on full for 24 hours, then you dial down the humidistat until the machine cuts off, thereby identifying the humidity threshold. For us, this meant dialling back to about the 3-to-4 o'clock position (no idea what relative humidity that represents as there's no display). Anything above that and the unit runs constantly with no improvement in performance, so there's no point burning electricity trying to dry the air out any further - after 24 hours of constant running in normal conditions (no floods or laundry), it's probably as dry as its going to get. Finally, a note on the dreaded yellow "pause" or "defrost" light. Yes, it does come on occasionally - even in a warm, heated house. This is because the condenser is ice cold; it needs to be to condense moisture out of the air. As a result, fine layers of "frost" can accumulate even if the ambient temperature is warm. If this builds up, the machine flips into defrost mode. Unfortunately, the defrost mode isn't very intelligent. The fan keeps running, which makes sense at first if its trying to draw warmer air into the unit to aid the defrosting. However, it doesn't seem to have any way to sense that the defrosting as completed - it just sticks in this mode and purrs away for hours on end doing nothing but burning your precious money! Disconnect the power (i.e. at the wall) and reconnecting it will reset the unit and normal operation resumes. Overall: it's ok, does a reasonable job with a couple of minor quirks. Suspect it may struggle in larger properties, where it may be best suited to localized use (i.e. problem rooms or conservatories, etc.)

Delonghi DEM 10 out of 10!
In May we moved into a 200 year old cottage that had been empty for 10 months or so. There was evidence of an old condensation problem on some of the walls many of which felt damp but there was little or no rising damp. As an artist I work with paper a lot & due to the high indoor humidity this was cockling & you could feel it was damp to the touch. I had assumed that opening the house up & heating it would start to solve the damp problem. The summer has been so wet here this wasn't the case & I bought a Delonghi DEM10 dehumidifier. I chose this model because of the good reviews I had read which mentioned how quiet it was in operation. Within 2 hours it had reduced the humidity in my studio from 75% to 62% & after several hours this was reduced further to 52%. It is removing around 1 litre of moisture every 3 hours & my paper no longer cockles. The same results were found anywhere it has been used & it has reduced the overall humidity in the house by a good 8-10%. It is remarkably quiet & is no noisier than an oscillating table fan. I had planned to use it overnight when I am not working but it doesn't bother me when I'm working. I would definitely recommend this product if you have a smallish house & noise bothers you. One down side is the electricity it uses. It is rated at 230W so uses about 1 unit every 4 hours, not a lot but in constant use 24/7 this adds up. The same would be true for any appliance but it needs to be born in mind when choosing something like this. After 2 weeks constant use it is not now needed all the time & instead is turned on as required. It appears very well made & I have confidence it will give many years service. All in all a very good product.

pretty good
Bought this a few months back having researched the market. in my experience it does the job - it sucks the water out the air. few specific comments: It works best in warm environment (as do most dehumidifiers). If the house isn't warm, it doesn't dehumidify - the fan is on but the (noisier) dehumidifier doesn't kick in. I've found it doesn't actually need to be that cold for it to not work. What I do therefore is put it near a radiator and I try to raise it off the ground if possible, and only turn it on when the heating is on. This seems to make a big difference to how much water it sucks out the air. Noise - sure it's quite noisy. The fan on its own isn't but with the dehumidifier working too it is. Mine is slightly quieter if you tilt it forward a bit by putting a magazine or something something under it at the back, but either way, it's not quiet! We put it in a room we're not in usually. Size - you can get bigger ones, but they'll be heavier, and this one aint too bad. It's very handy for moving it around to where it's needed, and for putting it ontop of coffee tables, ottomans etc to get it off the floor. Overall, cheap price and works so I'm happy with it.
