No don't put color sync SPA on to prep your hair. SPA removes orange tones. You need orange for the brown to take or apply brown with gold in it. Hope this helps

with the activator is it 1:1 proportion?

No, I double the activator and a tad more. I also leave it on for ages some times, it’s very conditioning
