The dish can be used with the butter on the tray and the lid placed over the block of butter or it can be reversed with the butter in the deeper end and the base as a lid. I prefer to put butter in the deep end as I feel it keeps the dish cleaner however, by using it my preferred way the writing on the side of the dish will be upside down (this is okay by me).
