Great Ethernet Switch
I bought this to set up a wired network for my smart TV, Blu Ray Player & games console. My cable router is on other corner of the living room so got this & a 10m Cat6 cable to hook up & works great. Switch is just that, no frills, no fuss, no unecessary buttons of anything actually on it, just plug in & play set up. LED lights on front shows power on, & any live connections , & blinking indicates data transfer. I think if your gonna get one of these Gigabit switches, go for a decent Cat6 ethernet cable for the router connection & also for the connections to your equipment. Smart TV apps like bbc Iplayer, 4OD etc load up much quicker & no loss of signal like when using wireless, great! All in all a very good buy & recommended.

Bargin price for an excellent product
This is such a good product, easy to use and works straight out of the box. ---- Positives ---- - Easy to setup and use, just plug in power and ethernet cables, no technical knowledge required - Bargin, great product for the price - Once installed no need to touch it again, maintenance free - Size of the product is slightly smaller than I was expecting which is great when space is an issue - It just works ---- Negatives ---- - It does feel a little cheap when you hold it, but what do you expect for the price? Not really a negative I'm always impressed with TP-Link products, good value for money in my opinion.

First choice for a second buy
This will be my 2nd one. First one was under £8 but everything has gone up in price since (3 years ago). The device does the job very well. Yes it is plasticy but if you don't intend to put a flower pot on top so what? We use it in a rather complicated network. Fiberoptic broadband modem router. CAT6 throughout the house using a 24 port switch etc. If one connects 2 switches to the same network (to serve different locations) it might create a bottleneck: all traffic might get routed over the slowest device. My friend, who is a licensed network designer installing networks in hospitals etc., checked things out and the TP-Link switch is not causing any trouble. Maybe it's too simple to do so or the 24-port switch costing 25 times more than this 5-port device is too smart. Anyway. It's a good device. No need to pay more. For those contemplating whether to buy a 5 or an 8 port switch: mind that you need 1 port to hook the device up to the Ethernet. So if you get a 5-port switch you will be able to attach (only) 4 devices to it. If you are very sure you won't attach at a certain location more than 4 devices then a 5-port switch is the right choice. If you buy at the same time an Ethernet cable buy one that has it's connector protected by a rubbery cap. The small plastic bit that 'locks' the cable into the Ethernet slot tends to break and then the cable will keep dropping out of your device.

TP-Link TL-SG1005D 5-Port Gigabit Switch
I bought this to replace a 10/100 Netgear switch I use by my TV as I gradually upgrade my home network to wired Gigabit. Delivery was swift as usual and the item was well packaged. The switch itself is very simple, just plug and play, although this of course means you actually only have 4 ports free to connect equipment to once you have added a connection to your router, but that is fine for my needs. Unlike the Netgear it replaces the TP-Link switch can be wall mounted which is very handy and helps me keep things behind the TV nice and tidy. As the TP-Link is pretty "cheap and cheerful" it doesn't feel as solid as the Netgear but putting it on a wall keeps it pretty safe from being bashed around. If you have any concerns then consider the more robust metal version. Overall you really can't go wrong at this price, it's simple and does the job effectively. Recommended. Update: 11/05/2015 The switch is still going strong and I have amended the review to reflect the comment below on plugging into any port which I wasn't aware of at the time. After about 12 months of use I unplugged the switch briefly while I changed some things around and the plastic top pin on the plug snapped off and is now wedged into the plug socket it was in. Not a major concern, it is the bottom two pins on the plug that have metal contacts and I have plugged it back in and it works fine, but it does show that it is made to a price point (or I am just clumsy!), I guess.

Inexpensive, compact, and it just works
I read a number of helpful reviews for a number of switch units before purchasing the TP-Link unit, and I thought I'd add my thoughts. For me, it was a toss up between this unit, and Netgear's slightly more expensive 5 port offering: Netgear GS105 5-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch Netgear's unit comes in a rugged metal chassis, and boasts a slightly smaller footprint... for an extra £10 - £15 over the TP-Link. The most important issue for me was that the unit should work with the Virgin Media Superhub, to achieve gigabit ethernet connections upstairs in our shared house. After a lot of searching through reviews I found a couple of testimonies stating that it did, so knowing that I went for the cheaper TP-Link option. And I'm glad I did. The TP-Link 5 port switch is smaller than the images portray, meaning that the Netgear's slightly smaller footprint wasn't that big of a deal anyway. Though the chassis is plastic, it feels rugged; definitely plenty hardy enough to stand up to the minimal abuse it will receive sat on my desk. Trust me, it will literally just sit on my desk... there's simply no need to move the unit for any configuration (save add another device). It was just simple plug and play operation, with absolutely no connectivity issues. The LED's on the front panel only light when a device is connected to that particular port, and flash to indicate traffic. EDIT I originally wrote that the LEDs were not dual colour (green for 1000mbps, orange for 100mbps), but apparently this is incorrect. Though I have not tested this it seems that the LEDs will change colour to reflect the connection speed. As all my devices seemingly have gigabit capability I was mislead into thinking the LEDs were green only. Overall, this is a neat little box that does exactly what it's meant to with minimal fuss. It's up to you whether you want to pay extra for the metal chassis offered by other units, but at the end of the day, both achieve the same function. Recommend this!

Great product why pay more?
Having knowledge of networking unlike most people, I know that wireless just doesn't have the speeds and is definitely not future proof. with wireless and the older 10/100mb/s i used to get around 10-15mb/s transfer speeds because what most people don't realise is like broadband the speed is megabits not bytes which in simple terms means you get around 10-12% in bytes so with 1000megabit i get 50mb/s transfer to other pc's using usb drives and around 90-150 using internal hdd's which is a big improvement. I can stream movies beautifully from one pc to another which I could before but I feel the fast fwd is much quicker now. Very easy to set up as well literally just plug and play, I also have a wireless router connected to it for mobile devices etc. and works well. Overall great bit of kit no messy software, no resetting regularly due to internet blips highly recommended

Inexpensive yet supurb!
These little boxes do exactly what it says on the tin and what's more, judging by the lack of any heat (to the touch), they do it very efficiently. I have purchased three of these units now, two of which I have connected in series (in a chain) to give me multiple outputs in different rooms to save additional cabling. Despite this they transfer data at around ten times faster than I was getting with the old 100Mb/s switches. I have mixed these high speed switches with lower speed 100Mb/S switches too to give me outlets for lower speed devices such as internet TVs and it all works reliably with no hick-ups. I have approx 20 wired devices around the house with up to 3 mixed speed switches connected in series and it all works as expected. Delighted! The device comes with a small power supply, that plugs into a standard 13A socket and with a generous amount of cable.

Simply Excellent !!
I have my router connected to my main phone socket in an upstairs bedroom. From the router I connect to a TP powerline in the same room and have connected this switch to the other TP powerline downstairs in the living room. From this switch I have had at the same time, my SKY HD box using SKY+ Anytime downloading programms, and my PS3 streaming HD programmes through the BBC iPlayer, both without issue. I wasn't sure if the switch would work connected to the far end of a power line but other reviews confirmed it could so I thought I'd give it a try, and I'm glad I did. It works perfectly straight out of the box, no configuration simply plug and play, and a great price too.

Brillant! Perfect for my SBO and/or Man Cave ... 4.5 Stars ... Here's Why!
I have a Small Biz Office (SBO) in my Man Cave, and during some recent remodeling, I updated my audio-visual gear, added a cable box, and brought down an 50 foot Ethernet Cable from my newest Apple Extreme Router. Since I also added a Sony PSP + Roku 3, I found myself running out of Ports, so I ordered this TP-Link 5-Port Desktop Switch. The Pro's - basically 3 main points to make that produced this 4.5-Star rating. This is NOT my usual Technical Review, just wanted to quickly write this, so others can possibly benefit from it. 1. If there is one thing that makes this device so Easy to Use for ANYONE is that it is all Plug and play, it's Automatic connectivity and hassle free. You don't need anything else, you just plug-in and it negotiates, senses, and makes it's own adjustments on Auto Pilot, to Optimize all of your Internet traffic. What could you possibly need? Nothing, Nada, Zero! 2. A Ethernet Device with Green Technology Switch already built-in that powers down all ports when there is no demand. There is nothing else to add or plug in! At a glance, you can See which Ports are currently in use, with small, green blinking (working) lights, while other ones not in use are static. 3. Performance - so far I have been able to send much larger MM files, graphic-intensive files and RAW images, w/o a hitch; however, it's a bit early to really make a sound, objective review this early, so I will only assign it a 4.5 Rating from this perspective, until 6 or 9 months down the road, when it has been properly broken in. This is one of those 'No-Brainer' devices that is extremely EZ to set-up and should be on everyone's Bucket List! Will update in about 6 months, so stay tuned. Thx for stopping by.
