Amazing Epic Best Graphics Ever WOW
If you haven't played Killzone 2 yet, where have you been?? Go and get yourself a copy NOW! Wow this game seriously takes the FPS genre and perfects it in every way possible. The controls and the awesome lean and peek system, combined with the realistic feel and true sensation of causing real damage with every shot are just the start of it. Beyond that you have one of the most incredibly detailed and atmoshpheric games you can ever play. The graphics are simply INSANE. From the thunder storms and flying bugs in the air to waving banners and dirt and blood flying at the camera down to the very smallest spec of dust to the insanely detailed buildings, vehicles, weapons and enemies, no stone has gone unturned in the production of this game and it's very clear to see. The AI is the smartest I have ever seen, in the final battle of the game you are confronted with herds of helghast but you must move forward with your guys and take over their position otherwise you will never be able to proceed forward, they are that clever they just keep sending out more guys and covering all the best spots unless you get right in there and force them to retreat. Not only that but enemies will seek you out, they won't stand still or take cover for long they will come and find you and find the best way to cover all your best routes out. It has to be seen to be believed how smart they really are. In terms of story and voice acting this game is top notch. You get that really grand Hollywood blockbuster feel with amazing graphics and details in the cutscenes with four really funny and memorable characters. Nothing is done half-hearted in the game, everything you see is made to be as epic has it possible could be. Some of the characters look real and the vehicles when they fly in with new squad members are just crazy. Some of the best smoke effects I have ever seen are also in this game and facial animation and when the guys run are some of the best motion capture I have seen too. The single player is a decent 8-10 hours depending on your skill level but you're gonna wanna play it again for all the trophies and this game has a TON of unlockables and secrets. Online is hands down one of the best online shooters you're gonna experience. The graphics are equal to the single player with incredibly detailed maps and graphics. I experienced no lag and there are always a ton of great players online to have fun with. If you love shooters this IS the game for you. Hell, if you love games, you owe it to yourself to get this game as it is probably one of the most impressive pieces of entertainment ever created. WOW, just WOW. 10/10

Killzone 2: Not a timeless classic but definitely worth playing
Killzone 2 takes place after the events chronicled in Killzone for the PS2, and Killzone: Liberation for the PSP. No longer do you play as Jan Templar, this time taking up the reigns as Tomas Sevchenko, otherwise known as simply Sev. Rather than fending off the Helghast forces on the ISA planet of Vekta, this time around you take the fight to the Helghan homeworld. Killzone 2's story is relatively simple; you go to planet Helghan with a bunch of other soldiers, and you shoot stuff. There isn't really much else to it than that. Occasionally you will see a cut scene that attempts to tell some sort of story, but the story is ultimately largely forgettable. There is a last ditch effort in the last fifteen to twenty percent of the game to try and make the story more interesting, but by this point in the game you simply don't really have much reason to care. That's not to say the lore behind the Killzone universe is uninteresting, it's just that you never really spend any time with any of the characters, and they are almost completely undeveloped aside from occasionally cracking a joke or their frequent uttering of the f-word. Fortunately for Killzone 2 the core shooting mechanics are absolutely superb. Every weapon is incredibly satisfying to wield and to shoot, and you can tell that significant attention went into making this game fun to play. The weapons function exactly like they do in the Call of Duty series, in that you must aim down the sight of your weapon to make precise shots. You can fire from the hip, but it is less accurate and more difficult to aim. Aside from this however, there is not much else to Killzone. You will occasionally use the sixaxis wireless controller to activate an explosive or to turn a handle, but these are mostly throwaway novelties that don't really add much to the overall experience. Killzone 2 also takes a new approach to the way weapons are managed in single-player. You can only carry one weapon at all times. This is both a great feature, but at the same time it hurts the game as well. Because you can only carry one main weapon aside from your sidearm, it takes away player experimentation with the various weapons in the game. When players come across new weapons they will try them out, but usually go back to their comfort zone. This could simply be due to ammo concerns, or a feeling that they won't be able to get by certain areas with a specific weapon. The sidearm is a nice touch, but it simply doesn't provide the player with enough security to try using a sniper rifle, shotgun, or bolt gun for more than a brief amount of time. Players will mostly rely on the standard ISA or Helghan rifles for the majority of the game. Increasing the weapon count to two probably would have encouraged people to take more risks in the single-player in terms of their weapon loadout. Needless to say, it's a good thing that Killzone 2's shooting action is so much fun, because it's easy to ignore the fact that you never do much else. Exploration is non-existent, and there is little to no character interaction aside from sometimes being accompanied by other squad members. Unfortunately Killzone 2's single-player is incredibly short, and it doesn't really have any bosses. You will come across the occasional "super" enemy but they are usually easily dispatched because the game virtually throws that particular enemy's weakness in your face the moment they appear. It's noble of the game developers to try and help you, but at the same time it takes all of the challenge away from these encounters because you instantly know how to dispatch them. These encounters are also largely infrequent, which even further makes them even more forgettable. There is a pretty great although extremely frustrating final encounter which involves fighting waves and waves of regular enemies as well, but this is definitely one of the highlights of the unique encounters featured in Killzone 2. Killzone 2's single-player is a fun experience in regard to the intense and satisfying shoot outs, but it never amounts to anything else. Combined with its short length, as well as a lack of any type of co-op, Killzone 2 ultimately winds up feeling like a bit of a missed opportunity, despite its incredibly solid shooting action. On the multiplayer side of things, Killzone 2 largely succeeds with flying colours. It's not hard to tell that a significant amount of time went into the creation of Killzone 2's multiplayer component. The unique aspect of Killzone 2's multiplayer is that it combines class-based team play with various game modes all in the same match. Killzone 2 seamlessly changes from team deathmatch to assassination, to capture and hold, and so on. Matches are won based on which team won the most amount of game types. You can win the team deathmatch round, but if you lose all of the other ones, then your team loses the overall match. It's a fresh take on the multiplayer aspect of a first person shooter because it takes modes which may have otherwise been throwaway modes (aka modes no one would regularly play) by inserting them into an overall game with other types of modes as well. However, you don't start Killzone 2's multiplayer with a bunch of classes to choose from. You begin with the standard soldier and barely any weapons, but the more you play and gain experience, more options become available to you. This is great because not only does it match you up with players of similar skill level, it gives everyone a chance to get used to the game before it throws all of these other classes and weapons in your face. This makes Killzone 2's multiplayer highly accessible to pretty much anyone, even people who rarely play first person shooters. When you start playing you don't have to worry about whether you should be a medic, and engineer, a saboteur, or whatever. You simply learn the maps, and how to get good, then you get to start experimenting with these other classes and weapons. The best part of it is that everyone else will start getting the new stuff around the same time as you do, so it allows everyone to get used to it together. The biggest problem with Killzone 2's multiplayer is that because all of the game modes are tied together, after a while it starts to feel pretty repetitive, and even kind of stale. The gradual unlocking of new classes and weapons is fun, but there are several weapons which are entirely absent that were included in the single-player campaign, such as the flamethrower and the bolt gun. These are both included in DLC maps, but if you don't buy them you won't have access to them in the multiplayer; but even then, they are exclusive to the DLC maps in which they are featured. Killzone 2's multiplayer component also only comes with eight maps, and while they are mostly incredibly well designed they will eventually start to get old pretty quickly, especially combined with the fact that every multiplayer match winds up essentially being the exact same thing time and time again. There are several map pack DLCs available, but I've never quite been able to get used to the notion of paying money for additional multiplayer maps, especially when you consider that when you add up all the money you can spend on DLC the game starts to approach the price range of eighty dollars. It's no secret that Killzone 2 is a graphical power house, and it truthfully does look amazing. On an HDTV Killzone 2 simply blew me away. This game is astounding from a technical standpoint, and is easily one of the best looking console games ever created. The art design of Killzone 2 is also quite exceptional, the whole game world has this really dirty, dusty appearance that really sets it apart from other games. One of the earlier levels has these huge lightning bolts streaming across the sky with thick dark clouds above, which creates a truly great atmosphere for war. It really feels like there is a true battle to the bitter end going on here. The Helghan imagery which is obviously influenced by World War II and Nazi Germany also helps give Killzone 2 a unique feeling that helps separate it from other shooters on the market. If you're sick of playing in the same type of atmosphere over and over again, then Killzone 2 provides a nice change from the norm.

Good, but doesn't tick all the boxes.
As someone who's enjoyed playing First Person Shooters like Doom, UT3, Quake, etc. on the PC, I was really looking forward to this. I'm a casual gamer fairly new to the PS3 platform - I don't have the time to be anything but so, I wouldn't be spending much, if any time, playing this online. When I read that this game not only had an excellent single player campaign but a Skirmish mode where you could play the multiplayer levels against configurable AI bots offline, I really thought I'd finally come across a FPS that ticked all the boxes. Well, sadly it doesn't. Let me ask you... What's the point of putting a Skirmish mode into a game, the fundamental concept of which is to allow players to enjoy a multiplayer experience offline then force them to play online if they want to rank up and unlock anything but the barest minimum of weapons, soldier classes and game customisation available to them. A useful piece of information to Guerilla Games... not everyone wants to or can play online. These kind of forced restrictions in games really makes my blood boil and has spoilt what is a visually stunning game. GG also thought it would be clever to introduce a "more realistic" feel to the game with its controls. This backfired on them big style with a huge amount of controversy generated on the forums after its release. The controls are better after the release of a patch but they still take a helluva lot of getting used to. In summary then, the game looks fantastic and the Single Player campaign is an experience to behold. Controls are either going to be loved or loathed and forget about enjoying all the weapons, soldier classes or any offline game customisation unless you're willing to pitch yourself against the hoardes of teenage psychopaths online.

Killzone 2 - ABSOLUTE KILLER
First of all a big thankyou for Amazon for getting the game to me 3 days before it hit the shops. The game itself is an absolute joy to play. The control and gameplay seem somewhat clunky at first but you soon realise that this adds to the quality and does not detract. The weapons seem ungainly/unwieldy but after a while you realise that thats the way they might be if the scenario was reality. After all, could you pick a dirty great blaster up and be a dead shot straight away; especially running around in body armour and trying not to get yourself killed at the same time? The gameplay is obviously straight out of the FPS rule book and at times feels a bit "on rails" but even if it is the action and missions come thick an fast leaving you no time to ponder the fact that you may be being led by the nose a little bit now and then. knowing you can bring down whole building s with the right weapon and realising well aimed shots are the only ways to get kills merely adds to the suspense and excitement. I am by no means a hardcore gamer merely a weekend and evenings kinda guy (family and work allowing)but having played on consoles since the Megadrive and before know this MUST appeal to all FPS fans alike. It is graphically excellent and the sound/FX stunning (using surround/5.1 and HD screen) If you have played COD4 or WAW or even Battlefield you'll have experienced the cream of FPS's. This title ranks right up there with those except that it brings a little something different to the party. Similar but different. I am still trying to work out exactly what. Put it this way. I played the game offline for 5 hours straight on Tuesday night and I have not done that since Resident Evil hit the PSone years ago. Worth every penny. NB: One cautionary note. The action is bloodthirsty and at times gory. The dialogue whilst sometimes funny is akin to that found in the Full metal Jacket classic movie. As a Dad I choose not to let my boys play any games like this and feel others should try to do the same for obvious reasons. But that s another debate. Killzone is brilliant!!

A remarkable achievement
Obviously, with all the hype surrounding his game over the last few years, it was always going to have to be something really special to live up to expectations. As a FPS game, it doesn't exactly break any new ground, but it has everything a good shooter needs: your character feels weighty yet agile, the guns handle well and the enemy AI is excellent. You will have heard lots of talk about how good the graphics are, and frankly, the visuals have to be seen to be believed: textures are incredibly detailed, depth of field and blurring effects are spot on, lighting is incredible (the thunder storms and lightning flashes are the best I've ever seen in a game). But phenomenal as the graphics are, a game needs more than just shiny visuals (although Killzone 2's graphics surpass anything I've ever seen; most games' cutseens don't even look this good). Killzone 2 certainly has the substance to match the style: although the levels are linear (who's complaining, COD 4 and 5, Gears of War etc are too), the intensity of the battles makes you feel right there in the action. The music rises to a climax, and with storms raging and bullets flying, it's easy to forget you're playing a game. OK, so the story isn't exactly original, but fighting through Helghan's streets, you witness brutality from both your team mates and the chillingly cruel Helghast. There's a sense of realism found in few other games, and usually, realism in a game can mean fun has been sacrificed somewhere along the line, but the makers of Killzone 2 have succeeded in creating a game that's gritty and compelling as well as damn good fun. A must buy for any PS3 owner.

A good effort
Call of Duty series is better. Best bit about this game is the AI; it's nice to have enemies taking sensible evasive action for once rather than trying to deflect your bullets with their bodies! Also, visually it's very impressive. Things I found annoying were the weapons (not that much variety), the control system (R3 for aim?!) and the limited field of vision making the game fell a bit claustrophobic (maybe that was intentional, but I prefer a larger field of view). Oh, and was it really necessary to use the 'F' word so much in the dialogue? All in all an enjoyable experience, but not a genre leader for me.

Amazing visuals, AI, almost everything
Yes the game does involve pretty much level after level of shooting people and in that sense is repetitive. However, this is clearly not something that makes it a bad game. Any genre of game is the same. A first person shooter will always be primarily shooting people and to use this as an excuse to rate the game badly is purely wrong and useless to someone wishing to buy this. The game levels are nicely designed to offer changes of scenery, and frequent uses of different tanks, mounted guns, mobile weapons and vehicles breaks the gameplay up and it almost always feels fresh. The visuals are simply amazing, the effects and graphics superior to any current console game on either Xbox 360 or PS3. Fanboy arguments aside, this is simply an excellent game and had it been available on the Xbox 360 it wouldn't be getting so many false reviews claiming bad handling etc from people who are obviously Microsoft fanboys or employees. If you don't believe the hype, try the demo first and then buy when you see how amazing the visuals and gameplay is right from the opening level, where it is very difficult to see where the cutscene ends and actual game play graphics begin.

Killzone? Dullzone more like
This isn't going to be an exhaustive review of Killzone 2 (for that, see the reviews by The Milkman and The Happy Space Invader as they have summed up my opinion of the game better than I could have done.) I also haven't played online so my review is just that of the single-player game. As has been said before, the graphics and enemy AI are top-notch, although the blood splatter when you shoot an enemy soldier looks more like an explosion in a ketchup factory than a bad guy getting his comeuppance. The graphics and general air of the game give you the feeling of being on your own, outnumbered and stuck in a putrid cesspool where everyone wants you dead (sounds a bit like my workplace.) I couldn't say that it would compete with some other games on the PS3 for atmosphere, but as a shooter it's better than most. Now we get to the much talked about controls - you'll either like `em or hate `em - I seriously doubt that you'll love `em. The developers have added what they like to call `weight' to the movement but what this means in real terms is that left and right movement has a noticeable lag followed by acceleration of problematic proportions. Aiming with any degree of accuracy when you have a dozen enemy bearing down on you is virtually impossible and changing the sensitivity in the options menu doesn't really help that much. Unfortunately, the Helghast aren't lumbered with such hindrances and more often than not one will pop up and shoot you even as you're trying, and failing, to get your crosshairs trained on him. The enemy also take a lot of hits before they go down so unless you're quick on the draw and have cover close by you may well find yourself bagged and tagged before you can say `Oh darn, not again'. Other than the controls the main problem with Killzone 2 is that there isn't anything here the average gamer won't have seen done before and done better. With every new chapter you'll be greeted by the same old cityscape / desert town / base that you've played through in other games and no matter how much you hope things will get more exciting, they just don't. Aside from a couple of weapons found in later levels, the guns are pretty forgettable and you only get a couple of chances to drive vehicles and even these aren't exploited fully. That's not to say that Killzone 2 isn't without its charms and some of the gameplay (especially later on) is actually quite enjoyable, but those occasions are few and far between and I found myself playing the game just to get through it rather than because I was enjoying it. It's true that some people will have no problem with the controls from the outset and if you're one of them then I envy you. But having played through the single-player game once, my original desire to play online has been quelled by those awful controls and I really have no desire to see all-too-familiar chapter after chapter of a game that promises so much yet delivers so little.

Killzone rules!
