The Teaching for Understanding Guide (Jossey Bass Education Series)

Good book for future teachers

This is the best book on teaching and curriculum development that I have ever encountered. As a high school science teacher I had already been rebelling against the "march through the textbook" approach, but I had no coherent framework for reimagining my curriculum. I still teach pretty much all the same material, but with a structured approach to encouraging students to understand why they are learning it, how it fits together and what it all means.

Blythe gave an organized guide to creating a lesson for understanding. It was easy to follow and well explained. The classroom examples were perfectly match with each section and helped with content understanding.

The Teaching for Understanding model is a simple and straight-forward way to think about designing curriculum. It has strong similarities to the Buck Institutes protocol for project-based learning. It also feels quite similar to Wiggins And McTigue's Understanding by Design. I wished they had included more useable templates that align with their model. A good read!

This is an outstanding short book for teachers of all ages. It presents a good summary of ideas and suggestions that work in classrooms and that are based on solid research. The book is nicely structured to be used by a single teacher or as a faculty looking to improve their students' learning.

I would not buy this book for trying to improve my teaching. I had to buy it for a class and it had some good ideas in there but there are better books out there.
