This French thriller is the directorial debut of Jean-Jacques Beineix. Jules (Frรฉdรฉric Andrรฉi) is a Parisian mail courier in possession of two highly sought-after tapes: the first contains a rare recording of American opera singer Cynthia Hawkins (Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez), with whom he has fallen in love; the second is a tape slipped into his bag by a young woman just before she is murdered. The unwitting Jules thus finds himself being pursued by Taiwanese bootleggers and a thuggish gang of drug dealers who will do anything to get their hands on the cassettes. Review: Masterpiece - One of the best films ever made! Review: Absolute classic and a total joy - Just sheer pleasure from start to finish. I saw this when it was new and loved it, watching it again with friends who had not seen it before we all loved the visual quality, the humour, the characters (you want thuggish gangsters, Diva has the best camp gangster thugs ever) A romantic thriller about opera and Paris featuring a postal delivery boy on a moped and an actual Diva, with a side serving of Deus ex Machina, artistic shoplifting, high speed chase, blackmail and police corruption.

What's with the double translation?
The film is terrific but the version presented by Amazon is marred by having both English subtitles and poor American-accented English dubbing. The two translations differ considerably, causing confusion for the viewer, particularly over the clashing nicknames for some characters. It would have been better to have the original French soundtrack with English subtitles.

Diva is a masterpiece and a surreal film experience
I vividly recall the movie poster for this film in the 80's and also seeing numerous trailers but somehow I managed to miss viewing it. Diva is a masterpiece and a surreal film experience that constantly keeps the viewer on edge as the story progresses. Wonderful use of camera work, rich vivid colours and lots of unexpected twists and turns. The stylish music throughout reminds me very much of early 80's Italian cinema - beautiful! Highly Recommended and so much better than the movies Hollywood are constantly churning out today.

Good film with subtitles
I recalled seeing this at the pictures years ago but have never seen it on the TV so thought I'd get it on DVD. Not disappointed, had forgotten the ending so a bonus there (good twist)! Excellent chase scene though not as long as I remembered, and some slow/odd plot, but generally enjoyable if you can be bothered with the sub-titles. Well filmed, good sound. Believe to be original and genuine from manufacturer (ie not dodgy pirate copy like the version of The Commitments that I bought on-line)

Badly dubbed.
Disappointed to find itโs been very badly dubbed into American English. Was expecting French with English subtitles.

Visually stylish
Maybe its the fact that I work in advertising that I am such a big fan of French thriller Diva, but Alex Coxโs Moviedrome critique of it being a film of style rather than narrative intrigued me rather than put me off to watch it. I still enjoy watching Diva immensely, hence why I bought it on Blu-Ray. The film is visually stunning and it has more of a plot than movie critics give it credit for. if you enjoy a thriller, going to an art gallery or an installation - then I think you will see something in Diva

Dilightfull!!
I saw this film a few years after it came out, thought it was absoloutly stunning, certainly one of the new wave of chic French films that paved the way for other such classics as Betty Blue. Watching it again as an adult wasn't quite as fulfilling as the last time I saw it as an impressionable youth. Diva basically has 2 plots that run side by side, the story of 2 tape recordings, One a Illegal recording of an Opera Diva made by a postman and the other a testimony by a local prostitute about a powerful Drug Lord, The postman ends up in possession of both and is chased by 2 sets of criminals, 2 Chinese chaps and 2 french hitmen, Dominique Pinon, one of the hitmen seems to be dressed exactly like the Terminator, Theres even one scene in the film that shares more than a passing resemblance to a scene in T2, Coincidence???. Anyway, these 2 plots don't seem to mesh that well and either one on there own would have been sufficient to carry the movie. Although not too much of a weakness they do make the film a little over long. Having said that apart from the slightly clunky scenario Diva has more than enough cool moments and characters to keep you hooked. It's also a triumph in cinematography, each scene and shot seems to have been lite and structured as if it was a painting, each frame being as important and well thought out as any masterpiece in the Lourve. If your into foreign of French cinema you just have to have this, it's probably THE most important French film of the 80's and you can see it's influence on nearly every French production since .

This DVD comes as a digitally remastered Version. This means that the quality is pretty good (regarding both sound and visuals). I love this film; it was one of the first movies I went to see as a Teen. It made a huge impression on me back then, and it still feels fresh and interesting today. Definitely worth buying if you are a 'Diva' fan or love retro cult movies.

A fascinating contemporary fairy-tale cum suspense-crime thriller. Strangely pertinent and topical, with it's references to white slave trade and a newly emerging global economy. A lovely and meditative young world of an aesthetically minded and stylish delivery driver is inadvertently thrown into the midst of several clandestine business deals. The young moped delivery driver, Jules, is smitten with a glamourous DIVA of the opera world. His almost groupie-like behavior toward the African-American Opera star hurls him into the sites of several tangled webs fraught with crooks and hit men,the most vicious of whom listens to an ever present earphone and kills with an extraordinarily accurate ice pick. Luckily for Jules, a fashionable vietnamese Lolita and her all-knowing nonviolent French guardian meditate on Jules situation, and look out for his well being. The Parisian underworld of Bois de Bourgogne prostitutes and crime marries with the glamour of the opera and fashion world creating a lovely visual palate of cinematic brilliance. Jules' champion, has a romance with the sea and a fancy to "stop the waves" through mind control, which ultimately brings the little trio to a visually stunning lighthouse by the ocean. It is truly eye-candy, but looking back to 1981 when it was created, it stands as a lovely documentation of the magical-visual world which could only happen in that innocent post punk, pre-aids moment. Just at the dawn of New Wave music, before the fashion tragedy of Madonna, the mini skirts and LP's are stylish and slick even now. The score by Vladimir Cosma, had a minor popularity of it's own, especially the Satie-like charmer, Promenade Sentimental ,and the Air from the Opera "La Wally" avoids any tedious connotations one might have connected to a bad opera experience. Gender, race and religion are all toyed with and treated with an open respect that at the time was fresh, though, perhaps not cutting edge. It is a gourmet after dinner mint accompaniment to a wonderfully crafted meal. Eye-Candy that will bring the scent and taste of youth back like a beautiful voice.
