Simultaneous translation!
This "dual-language" system is a long-overdue layout for being able to read both languages (on facing pages) simultaneously! I am not linguistically qualified to comment on the quality of the translation, but, as translation is often arguable, this layout allows the reader to directly compare (and annotate?)!

Useful for advanced students
This is a fine collection of gentle, sometimes moving, short stories by well-known and lesser known writers. The English translation, matched with the Russian, seems careful and accurate, though sometimes slightly unidiomatic. The back cover claims that this volume is suitable for intermediate, but I would say it is for the advanced student - some of the stories contain non-standard speech forms and quite complex grammatical structures. The stories appear in the order of their publication, not in the order of their difficulty for the foreign student. The volume also contains just a few pages of notes at the end - while useful, these could have been more extensive. On the whole, though, this is a highly recommended volume.

Great Russian Short Stories, by Yelena Francis (translator and editor) is a collection of known short stories, by known authors, but also less known outside Russia (for example, A. Grin and L. Zinovieva-Annibal). This book is not only for a dual language reader, although from the reaction of those, it is clear, what a delight it is to be able to read the original and then see the skilful and inspired translation. For people who learn either Russian or English it is valuable learning tool. However, at the same time, this book is also for those who are interested in Russia. It is a glimpse into the soul of the Russian people, their social interactions, from simple folks to complex intellectuals. The book is easy to read and the stories are moving. The book has illustrations at the beginning of each story, which gives it an added appeal by augmenting ones imagination and reinforcing the feeling of reality. Most stories are worthy of several reading. This book I recommend to young & older students of Russian Culture and History, Russian Language, and those who simply like excellent literature.

For me it reading is the best way for me to learn sentence formation and expression. This little book allows me to checkthe English right there, so is better than having to go back and forth with dictionaries or grammar books.
