I was going to get normal cement, I want to keep rodents out of the house.** A: I don't think this is the right thing for that. It may not harden without heat, or take months to. I had a rodent problem and was advised to use steel wool. Mice and rats will chew through nearly anything but the metal kills them before they can break through. I used fine steel wool chopped up and pulled apart and worked into normal filler compound, and I've also used steel scourers, the sort like a ball of spiral steel swarf. I was wrong. This fire cement is great. It has stayed blacker than the one my chimney sweep uses and hasn't cracked at all. I did make sure I prepared and cleaned the fire and flue well first but I didn't make too much effort to really get a perfect finish, yet it looks pretty good! It is a little coarser than cements I have used before but I am sure you could get a really smooth neat finish if you need it. Job done quickly and effectively at minimal cost and plenty left for future jobs.
