Bio load is the first thing to be considered. A 10 gallon tank with 10 fish needs more media than a 100 gallon tank with 1 fish. Generally speaking 1 box of this ceramic media can handle 40gal high bio load / 80gal medium bio load / 120gal low bio load. Saltwater tanks need more media as saltwater fish is more sensitive to ammonia and nitrite compare to freshwater species. Filter types need to be considered as well: Hang on back filter, canister filter or wet dry system require LESS media. Because all water entering filter is pushed through the media, makes the filtration highly efficient. If the media is placed in tank or sump, MORE media is recommended. **Q: Cross section size (approximate)?** A: Each piece measures 4” x 1 1/8” x 1 1/8” **Q: Should I arrange these vertically to allow for water flow through, for stack horizontally to provide water reisistance?** A: IMO, if the media is placed in low flow area, arrange it vertically will allow more water to pass through. If flow is strong enough, arrange horizontally will increase contact time. Either way works. **Q: About 8 of the pieces floats and cant get them to sit at the bottom of my tank. Any suggestions?** A: I silicone mine in together in groups of 6.
