Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, “Evil Dead Rise” tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sutherland and Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh‐possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable. A Frightening Experience, But Lacks the Magic of a Masterpiece
"Evil Dead Rise," the latest entry in the iconic horror franchise, brings a new chapter of terror and mayhem. While it succeeds in delivering scares and entertainment, it falls short of being a timeless classic. Here's a closer look: A Fresh Take: This installment moves away from the traditional cabin-in-the-woods setting, offering a fresh perspective on the series. The change in setting brings a new dynamic but may also alienate some hardcore fans of the original films. Scary Moments: "Evil Dead Rise" doesn't hold back on the frights. The signature gruesome visuals and horrifying scenes are present, offering a thrilling experience for horror enthusiasts. Performance and Characters: The cast does a commendable job in portraying the terror and struggle against the evil forces. While the characters may not be as memorable as those in the original films, they serve the story well. Nods to the Original: Fans of the original "Evil Dead" films will find familiar elements, including the iconic Book of the Dead and references to previous installments. These connections add a layer of enjoyment for longtime followers. Misses the Masterpiece Mark: Despite its strengths, "Evil Dead Rise" doesn't quite reach the heights of a masterpiece. While entertaining and scary, it lacks the depth, innovation, and enduring appeal that would place it among the genre's greats. A One-Time Watch?: The film offers a solid horror experience, but it might not have the replay value of other entries in the series. It's a movie worth watching for fans and newcomers alike, but it may not demand repeated viewings. Overall Verdict: "Evil Dead Rise" is a welcome addition to the franchise, delivering the scares and gore that fans expect. However, it doesn't quite capture the magic that made the original films stand out. It's a fun and frightening watch, but not a transcendent horror experience. If you're a fan of the "Evil Dead" series or just looking for a good scare, "Evil Dead Rise" is worth a watch. Just don't expect it to redefine the genre or leave a lasting legacy like its predecessors. It's a bloody good time but falls short of being a timeless classic.

Dark. Literally.
I wasn't much of a fan of the original /Evil Dead/, so I didn't expect much. In a sense, this is a perfectly fine sequel: the evil reappears, people die, what more could you ask for? Lots of blood at some points too. Well, what I could ask for is more light so I could actually /see/ the special/makeup effects which are clearly there but not clearly seeable. All in all, I found this more annoying than entertaining.

This review pertains to the limited edition 4K release by Arrow Video
"Evil Dead Rise" was released theatrically on April 21, 2023, grossing $147 million worldwide against a production of $15-$19 million. It was written and directed by Lee Cronin starring Lily Sullivan & Alyssa Sutherland. It is the fifth film in the long running Evil Dead series. Critical response was very positive overall. While I liked "Evil Dead Rise" when I initially saw it back in 2023, I also thought that it didn't feel like an Evil Dead film despite all of the expected ingredients that you would expect to see in a film from that series. I then realized via interviews with the producers is that this is exactly what they wanted with this film was to take the series in a fresh direction. Subsequent viewings increased my appreciation for the film and I think that everyone involved knocked it out of the park. It is gruesome, gory, tense and darkly funny in spots. The acting is very strong from the entire cast and the sound design is on point as well. Warner Brothers first brought "Evil Dead Rise" to 4K back in 2023 in a bare bones HDR10 only release. They would then reissue it shortly thereafter in a steelbook release that added a commentary track but the steelbook release was also HDR10 only and still pretty barebones. Arrow Video came to the rescue providing the film a lavish 4K limited edition release that adds Dolby Vision in addition to the previous HDR10 grading in the prior 4K release. While the HDR10 grading looks terrific, the addition of Dolby Vision kicks things up a notch with even more inky black levels and contrast which helps as this a very dark film from a cinematography sense. The film is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.39:1. I also noticed that the Arrow Video 4K release has better encoding with a higher bit rate than the Warner Brothers 4K. Another stellar job by Arrow Video. Audio is presented in the lriginal DTS-HD MA 5.1 and Dolby Atmos audio options. English subtitles are included for the hearing impaired. The audio options mirror the prior 4K release. Where the Arrow Video 4K release excels is regarding the special features which are substantial with the prior commentary track being carried over. The full list of extras included with the Arrow Video release are as follows: - Audio commentary with director Lee Cronin and actors Alyssa Sullivan and Lily Sullivan • "Come Get Some", a brand new interview with actor Lily Sullivan • "Mommy Deadite", a brand new interview with actor Alyssa Sutherland • "The Deadite's Daughter", a brand new interview with actor Gabrielle Echols • "The Levitating Dead", a brand new interview with actor Anna-Maree Thomas • "Conjuring Deadites", a brand new interview with special make-up effects designer Luke Polti • "Chopping Up Deadites", a brand new interview with editor Bryan Shaw • "Sonic Possessions", a brand new interview with sound designer Peter Albrechtsen • "Music to Swallow Your Soul", a brand new interview with composer Stephen McKeon • "The Sound of Evil Dead Rise", a 2023 interview with Cronin and Albrechtsen by Glenn Kiser, director of the Dolby Institute • "Raising a New Evil Dead" featurette • "Ghost Train", a 2013 short film directed by Lee Cronin • Behind-the-scenes video clips and still gallery • Concept artwork gallery • Storyboard gallery • Trailer and TV spots • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Waldemar Witt • Double-sided fold-out poster featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Waldemar Witt • Collectors' booklet featuring new writing on the film by Michael Gingold So if you are a fan of the film, the superb Arrow Video limited edition 4K is worth picking up purely for the extras with the addition of Dolby Vision being nice as well. Well worth the double dip and highly recommend!

Just great. C'mon! C'mon!
What's not to love? Everything I wanted in a horror movie. Just unhinged insanity.

Great Horror Movie But Doesn't Feel Like Evil Dead
It's still a 5 star horror movie for me personally, and I love it, but it doesn't feel like an Evil Dead movie. It's not that it doesn't take place at the cabin because neither did Army of Darkness and that's definitely an Evil Dead movie. It's not the lack of gore, demonic possession, or body horror either, because they're all present and executed wonderfully. But I think I figured it out. It's the weakness of the taunts from the Deadites. Sure, they're still personal and meant to be hurtful, but they're not absolutely vile like the taunts in the rest of the movies in the franchise. It's probably because they decided to use child actors. The kids did a great job, but I can see from a writing perspective how you probably wouldn't want to tell a child that their mother is being ra**d in hell, even if it is all make-believe. But even with the heavily toned down dialogue, there's a lot to love about this movie. Plus, the ending opens the door for the continuation of the franchise and that makes me happy. It's nice to see modern remakes of a beloved franchise that don't make a mockery of the originals, something that's very rare these days.
