Ward D: A gripping psychological thriller

I ended up liking this a lot. A great twisty ending! Well written but I did lag a bit in the middle and might have given up if I had not previously enjoyed other Freida McFadden books. I'm not really sure why the tension did not hold up for me as well as it should. Perhaps it was the "now and then" structure. I have never liked the jump back and forth in timelines, and I think in this instance it served to break the tension of the "now" situation rather than enhance it. However the last thirty pages had me holding my breath and the end [if not entirely unexpected] left me with an echo of sadness. Hence the five stars rating.

Ward D is one of those thrillers that gets under your skin almost immediately. Freida McFadden has a way of making even the quiet moments feel loaded, and I liked how the story leans into the unsettling details: the locked doors, the strange noises, the patients who seem to know more than they should. Amy’s voice feels genuinely human — anxious, determined, and carrying secrets she’s desperate to keep buried. Her reactions make the tension feel real rather than exaggerated. The dynamic between Amy and the ward itself is what drives the book. It’s almost like the setting becomes a character — unpredictable, eerie, and full of shadows that don’t behave the way they should. As people begin to vanish, the vibe shifts from medical suspense to something much darker, and the pacing picks up in a way that keeps you reading without stopping. The sense of isolation is incredibly effective; you feel trapped right alongside her. A great pick for readers who enjoy psychological thrillers set in confined spaces, especially ones where the atmosphere does half the storytelling and every character might be hiding something. Overall, Ward D is a tense, twisty, and unsettling read — quick, claustrophobic, and packed with that signature Freida McFadden punch that keeps you guessing right up to the final reveal.

Loved it, I was that engrossed in the book, I finished it in 2 days

This book fell apart at the beginning of it maybe due to the heat wave . But as I brought it brand new I was not impressed. That said it was a very good read it kept me engaged with its twist and turns

4.5⭐ I absolutely ate this book up and couldn't put it down! I both hated and loved that I couldn't figure out what was going on. Usually I can predict a plot quite quickly but there were so many curve balls in this book that I didn't expect! I just found myself unable to stop reading because I needed to know what happened! I am usually a fantasy / romance reader and this was my first psychological thriller read but I really enjoyed this and will definitely read more. I'm also usually very picky when reading anything to do with mental health conditions because there's so much negative representation. And although yes there were people with mental health in the book who were dangerous, there were others who were little sweet hearts. I liked that there was an accurate representation that all people with mental health conditions present differently and not all are dangerous. Overall, a fantastic read and I definitely recommend

Sou da área da saúde e gosto muito de saúde mental e psiquiatria. Achei o livro extremamente interessante porque me faz relembrar alguns conceitos da área e me prendeu muito!!! Mesmo quando eu achava que tinha entendido o plot twist, fui enganada mais de uma vez haha. O livro é excelente, como todos os outros dela.

Loved it from the first page until the very end. Freida just has a way of telling stories that unfold and have me hooked.

Älskar att köpa böcker från amazon, snabbt enkelt och smidigt. Böckerna kommer fram i bra skick och är oftast några kronor billigare. Själva boken är en klassisk Freida Mc Fadden. Spännande, lättläst och underhållande!

Kept me hooked from beginning to end. Well written, and the plot twist did not disappoint. Highly recommend to thriller books lovers.
