What is the sound (scone) level of this fan?

I believe it operates at .9 @110cfm .6 @80 cfm .4 @50cfm. It's advertised as <.3 scone which is true if measured off of the start up speed. Since it is a DC motor it has what would be noticed as a slow start but that is totally normal. They have a larger unit also that has a light with a 6" exhaust and it tops out at 150cfm and it is maybe a little above 1 scone at full speed. These are in opinion hands down the best residential bathroom/utility room exhaust fans. I don't even offer anything else to my customers. You won't be disappointed.

Yes. If you can get the knockout out and enough vent tube down. Not your hole will need to be about 1/2” bigger than the fan to accomplish this and you will need to be in a stub/joist

The fan turns on but its not a constant speed/whir and it oscillates between on and off - is that how its supposed to work?

You've probably solved your problem by now, but for future purchasers reading these questions, this issue appears to be caused by certain timers that are not compatible with the unit. It should operate at constant speed. Mine shows up today so haven't tested yet, but I read that the Legrand RT2WCCV4 timer works fine.
