Didn't try the water pump pulley holder since I was pulling the whole timing set. Flex plate holder required some fussing: removed starter, inserted a long 1/4" extension into the ring gear holder (both to hold it and so it couldn't fall into the trans) and turned the crank until the tool bottomed out against the trans bellhousing while still engaged with the ring gear teeth. Little fussy but did the job and the price is right.
