When it arrived, I opened it and took it around the house to use it. The device works by locating the nail or screw used to attach the drywall to the stud, or finds metal stud. You may need to move the stud finder around a bit—think up and down, along with side to side— but when it finds a screw or nail, the magnet grabs onto it, and you can actually let go; it stays attached to the wall (or I was able to). I love the laser marker and level. I struggle to visualize a straight line, which makes it difficult for me to follow one to put in a screw if I am hanging or nailing something that needs to hit a stud. Now for the potential downside. If the build team was not so "on the mark" when building—and missed the stud and left the nail or screw in the drywall—you might get a false reading. I suggest that if you find a nail or screw, go up or down to confirm you find a row of them, not just one (or see if you find more nearby, which has happened to me). Like with anything else that uses a battery, I remove the batteries when I store it. Ziplock bags are your friend here, as I don't use a stud finder daily or weekly.
