I use more pepper so I filled the bottom part with pepper & have the salt in the top section to easily lift off. When I take the top part off, I have what I need right there & so handy. This is a good item for kitchens with small countertop space like mine so I'm very pleased at the quality of the Hasesne product & how well the parts are glazed. The black/white color theme is perfect for my kitchen & so I bought their set of mixing bowls that match as well. Again, very lovely.
