From R. F. Kuang, the #1 New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of Babel , this collection features the novels in her historical military fantasy trilogy— The Poppy War , The Dragon Republic , and The Burning God —a complete epic inspired by the bloody history of China’s twentieth century and filled with treachery and magic. The Poppy War A war orphan, Rin earned her place in Nikan’s most elite military school. There, she discovers her lethal, unearthly power of shamanism—and learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive. When an inevitable conflict arises between longtime enemies the Nikara Empire and the Federation of Mugen, Rin realizes her shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people. But as she finds out more about the god that has chosen her, the vengeful Phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her humanity. . . The Dragon Republic After committing an atrocity in battle, shamanic warrior Rin is consumed with guilt, an opium addiction, and the murderous commands of the fiery Phoenix god. Channeling her anger against the Empress who betrayed Rin’s homeland, she chooses to join forces with the Empress’s enemy, the Dragon Warlord. But as Rin discovers the true natures of the Empress and the Dragon Warlord, the temptation to unleash the Phoenix’s fearsome power grows—and so does her vengeance. . . The Burning God After saving Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress in a brutal civil war, Rin realizes that her homeland’s real power lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation. Vowing to defeat all who threaten the shamanic arts, Rin’s power and influence grows—but so does the Phoenix’s intoxicating voice urging her to burn the world and everything in it. . . “Mixing historical parallels of Chinese history, the themes of war, politics, and colonialism are balanced with terrific, flawed characters and amazing worldbuilding.”— Library Journal (starred review) Review: oh my goodness - Every time RF KUANG releases a book she creates a whole new world that you could fall in love with the talent in her pen is astounding. This series is so good. It’s ridiculous. It is one of the darkest, most beautiful, poignant, and utterly devastating. I will carry these characters with me long after finishing this series I don’t know if I could ever revisit it but to anyone who hasn’t read it yet: HIGHLY RECOMMEND. 5/5 stars!! Review: A world of awe, pain, nuance. GREAT READ. - The author? the book? STUNNING AMAZING This is the first ive read of R. F. Kuang’s works and I can already tell she’s going to become one of my favorite authors. I read this series because I heard it was good and I wanted to put off reading Babel cause I heard that one would break me… well this series broke me several times in such a good way and now I’m eager to read Babel and already purchase yellowface as well cause at this point I’ll trust what ever R. F. Kuang feeds me. I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to follow the book because I never really enjoyed books with themes of war and politics before but her way of writing is so engaging and digestible. It’s a medium read book in pace but with spikes of drama and awe that won’t allow you to put it down. I’m definitely glad I bought the box set. Quality: Didn’t have to “break in” the pages much. A bit thin but for the amount of pages it only makes sense.

A frustrating, but remarkable historical fantasy.
This trilogy is complex and nuanced. It is not a straightforward story of good versus evil. If you find yourself frustrated with the characters, especially the main protagonist, Fang Runin, remind yourself that she’s not a conventional heroine. You may find that none of the characters are truly likable. All suffer from flaws, most of them fatal. Your heart will ache for a satisfying conclusion. Your anger will demand it. You will come away unsatisfied. Never forget that the narrative arc is written within the context of Chinese history. This constrains it at the end because China’s actual history post Opium Wars is indeed one of tragedy, sacrifice, and a hundred years of humiliation at the hands of western and eastern imperial powers, relegating it to playing the “long game” that they hope will eventually lead to their national redemption.

Humm, why?
I have some definite mixed feelings about this series. The first book is pretty good, although it ends on an extremely graphic and brutal note. The second book is fairly standard overall, but the third book left me feeling like why did I slog through this? I understand the point behind the ending, but it still feels like a cop-out after everything the characters went through to get there.

So beautiful..
Really nice quality, but I found that there were slightly dents on the corners of 2 of the books. Probably from shipping. But nothing major.

Beautiful story
Loved this story. .. but .. I've noticed some weird commotion around my neighborhood after finishing this masterful series. Someone in my community's Facebook group was going on about how someone had opened "a tear jn the sky" and that lightening wouldn't stop coming down at night for three days jn a row. Of course, we called the police to investigate, but they couldn't figure it out. Is this related to the book?

A drag
It begins so well, a window into the life of an initially interesting character in a fictional-but-very-realistic world, with so many links to real world history. But as the story progresses, it's clear it becomes an episodic by the numbers telling of some pre-planned "I have to make references to all those horrible events in history" route which forces characters to become either OP or totally helpless depending on contrived circumstances. They become shallower. After a certain point it looks like the story will never end, and when it does it's also very non-sensical. I understand some might say that's the point, but if so, don't be mistaken expecting some thrilling adventure, it's not, it's a repetitive, downward spiralling drag.
