how wide is this fabric

Sorry unable to help. Ordered a metre of this fabric about 3 or 4 years ago to make a cover for a sewing machine and cannot remember the width of the fabric. Would supplier of the material be able to help you?

Are the polka dots small enough to use as piping?

Yes, I used this in black to edge a quilt with piping.

Can anyone recommend which colour sewing thread to use on this fabric as I’ll have to buy online as local shops closed due to lockdown?

From what I recall the fabric was one hundred per cent cotton so probably cotton would be best. However I always use just a polyester thread for most things. The only proviso I would say is I wouldn’t wash fabric on a hot cotton wash as if using polyester thread it may not hold up to high temperature. I always use 40 degree wash.
