The Story of Philosophy

The book on philosophy. Seemingly complex ideas made very simple, and before it gets bogged down in one persona for too long it moves into another. Each philosophers best and most enduring ideas.

I can't thing of a book on contemporary philosophy that has had a more profound impact than Will Durants The story of Philosophy. It's a fascinating read, summing up the ideals of the greats in easily understood language and digestible form. The book itself is nicely sized and well made, what I expect from a massive market paperback. The price is right, no complaints on that front, I do think the cover is a little ugly but hey, never judge a book by it's cover, am I right? Full marks, would recommend.

Alongside Bertrand Russell’s History of Western Philosophy, this is probably the next best book to buy. It is a book I thoroughly enjoy dipping into from time to time, and now that the kindle version is available, it can be read almost any time and anywhere. I should also mention Durant’s other major work: The Story of Civilization. These volumes (11 of them) also contain much philosophy. But unfortunately, most seem still out of print. Even many of the kindle versions aren’t yet available. But if you’re looking for a mix of history and philosophy, these works are admirably readable and a make a great companion to his philosophy. I hope you found my review helpful.

Amazing little book full of knowledge!

Book excellently put together, very readable. Condition was good, and delivery too, as expected.

A great introduction and summary of many of the key western philosophers throughout history. Really enjoyable insights and discussions of their main arguments and beliefs.

A good, brief introduction, all be it somewhat dated. For a more comprehensive (and expensive) survey some will prefer Bertrand Russell.

...sono un completo ignorante in materia filosofica, motivo per cui ho acquistato questo libro: penso sia ottimo per chi vuole infarinarsi in questa splendida materia. Come al solito dei libri scritti in lingua inglese, non si perde in un linguaggio troppo formale, preferendo la chiarezza della forma (anche per il primario obiettivo del solito ottimo Will Durant di scrivere un prodotto chiaro, che permetta a tutti di comprendere i concetti chiave della filosofia). Nonostante questi punti positivi, però, non lo definirei un vero e proprio libro di introduzione alla filosofia; purtroppo tale contraddizione credo derivi dalla somma cultura dell'autore, che da per scontati alcuni concetti. Per questo consiglio di abbinare un Dizionario della filosofia (idea sorta per caso a mia madre, che ne aveva uno delle superiori, e devo dire che ha reso la lettura più piacevole ed espansiva). Alla fin dei salmi lo consiglio a tutti: oltre a colmare una mia grande lacuna, mi ha anche dato quel senso di accrescimento personale che cerco sempre nelle letture.

Reading this book was like taking a tour of human thought. Mr. Durant is remarkably neutral in his analysis and sometimes a touch prone to exaggeration. The best thing about the book is the middle ground between giving too much and too less details. No wonder it is one of the most beloved books of all time.

i bought the paperback and it has very small paper size hard to read

Will Durant is my favorite historian, the way he writes and his own philosophy is incredible.

A milestone in the historiography of Philosophy. An excellent introduction to the subject.
