No, no lo haces. El medidor puede registrar datos sin estar conectado a una computadora portátil. Pero una vez que la memoria está llena, necesita la computadora portátil nuevamente para descargar los datos y borrarlos para otra grabación.

Does it need to be connected to PC for recording?

You only need to connect it to a PC to set up the recording session, not while you're recording data. Data is recorded in the meter's internal memory. The meter does not need to be connected while recording data, only for setup and download.

When you set up the recording session you can set the sampling rate, and also choose how you want to start the recording. Your choices are immediately after setup, by button push, or with a timer. By button push means you need to press the REC button on the device to start the recording. The timer option lets you start the recording automatically at a set time in the future.

Would this work if I hold it close to the ceiling to pick up the noise coming from the upper neighbor? Would it pick up all the noise/vibrations?

The meter will pick up all noise in its vicinity, so if you hold it close to the ceiling it will likely pick up some noise coming from above, but also any noise from the room you're in as well. The microphone is a directional microphone and picks up sound predominantly from the direction you're pointing it at, but it will also pick up some residual sound from the sides and back.

Will it also record on battery power alone for extended period of time?

Yes it will. But for longer periods, you have to set it up for longer sampling periods, otherwise the memory will fill up and limit the time you can record. For instance, at the shortest sampling period of 1 sample per second, you can record for 8 hours 53 minutes until the memory is full. At a 2 sec sampling period (i.e. record a sample every other second), it's 17 hrs 46 minutes, at a 5 sec sampling period, you can record for 1 day 20 hours 26 minutes and so on. The software will tell you for how long you can record when you choose a sampling period.
