Q: can an african grey fit in it

Although an African Grey would fit inside this cage, the spacing of the wires, the construction of the cage, and the gauge of the wire all would be inadequate for the African Grey - you need a more sturdy cage than this for that type of larger parrot. This cage is for small birds, like finches, parakeets, lovebirds, parrotlets, cockatiels. I think an African Grey could rip this cage apart if it had a mind to do so.

Q: How much of the 53 inch heighth is cage only?

Don't know where you got the 53" height from. This is the Prevue Hendryx F050 model your question is posted under and it's total height is 60" with the cage itself being 48"H x 37"W x 25" D (front to back); and that leaves 12" for the stand itself with the stand's storage shelf being about 6" above the floor. Very solid and very roomy. I purchased it at $181 and even at the current price I feel it is still a good deal for the asking price. Hope this helps.

23" depth 37"across 47" high. I first bought the slightly smaller cage then upgraded to this one. I have 2 aducockatiels who find this cage big enough to constantly mate in and they now wish to lay their 3rd clutch. So they are very happy. I still have 2 8 months old in with them and is big enough for the 4. It is not the pretiest cage- but great for the birds- every inch is usable space. My birds very active- I put ladders of all kinds running top to bottom in back and love to watch them- up and down all day - run run run!

Q: Can the bottom grate be removed so my birds can walk on the bottom plastic pan? If yes, does it leave space to outside? I do not like wire grates.

Yes, it can be removed, however, I wouldn't recommend it because it leaves a gap that could lead to an injured bird. I do not like my birds to walk on grates either so I put a layer of newspaper on top of the grate. The birds have a flat surface to forage on and it makes cleaning the bottom of the cage very easy--just change the newspaper, wrapping up whatever messes the birds have made in it. I have four budgerigars and it takes me about 5 minutes to wipe down their perches and change the newspaper every day.
