Huge capacity, easy NAS install, and the kind of dependable performance you want for serious storage
I picked up the Seagate IronWolf Pro 22TB for NAS/large-volume storage use, and it has been exactly the kind of drive I was hoping for: high capacity, straightforward installation, and strong performance for a traditional 3.5-inch hard drive. Installation was simple. It’s a standard 3.5-inch SATA hard drive, so it fit properly in my NAS drive tray with no unusual spacing or mounting issues. The SATA 6Gb/s connection uses the normal SATA data and power connectors, and the system recognized the drive right away. If you’re using it in a NAS, server, DAS enclosure, or desktop with 3.5-inch bays, compatibility should be straightforward, though I’d still recommend checking your NAS manufacturer’s compatibility list and making sure your firmware supports very large-capacity drives. The biggest selling point is obviously the 22TB capacity. Keep in mind that, like all drives, the formatted capacity will show lower in the operating system/NAS interface because manufacturers list capacity in decimal TB while computers often display it differently. Also, if you use it in RAID, your usable space will depend on the RAID level. Even with that in mind, this is a massive amount of storage for backups, media libraries, surveillance archives, creative project files, or expanding a multi-bay NAS. Performance has been very good for a 7200 RPM CMR drive. It is not an SSD, and random access will never feel like flash storage, but for large file transfers, backups, media storage, and NAS workloads, it feels fast and consistent. The fact that this is CMR is important to me because I wanted predictable write performance, especially for RAID/NAS use and large sustained transfers. It handles large files much better than lower-end drives intended for lighter desktop storage. Noise and heat are worth mentioning. This is an enterprise/NAS-class high-capacity hard drive, so it is not silent. You may hear seek noise, especially in a quiet room, and it should be used in an enclosure with decent airflow. In a NAS cabinet or server area, the sound is completely reasonable, but I would not expect it to be as quiet as a low-RPM desktop drive. Overall, this is a great choice if you need serious storage capacity in a NAS or server environment. It offers a strong balance of huge capacity, standard SATA compatibility, easy installation, CMR recording, and reliable-feeling 7200 RPM performance. For buyers building or expanding a NAS, this is exactly the type of drive I’d be looking at. Pros: - Massive 22TB capacity - Standard 3.5-inch SATA fit and connection - Recognized easily by compatible systems - CMR drive, better suited for NAS/RAID workloads - Strong sequential performance for backups and large files - Good option for media storage, archives, and NAS expansion Cons: - Not silent; typical high-capacity drive noise - Needs good airflow - Formatted/usable capacity will be lower than the advertised decimal 22TB, as expected Bottom line: If you need a large, NAS-focused hard drive with straightforward installation and dependable performance, the IronWolf Pro 22TB is an excellent option.

Overall Great for the price!! : Overall review on this drive
The Seagate IronWolf Pro 18TB (Recertified) Enterprise NAS HDD offers high-capacity storage and reliability, especially suited for NAS setups and enterprise environments where durability is essential. Here’s a breakdown of its performance, durability, and overall value as a recertified drive: Storage Capacity & Performance With an impressive 18TB of storage, this drive is perfect for handling large data volumes, making it ideal for users who need high-capacity storage in RAID or NAS configurations. The drive operates at 7,200 RPM and has a 256MB cache, ensuring smooth performance and quick data access speeds for backups, streaming, and large file transfers. It handles workloads up to 300TB per year, which is well-suited for heavy-duty use in small to medium businesses or creative setups. Recertified Quality & Value As a recertified product, this IronWolf Pro comes at a more affordable price point than a brand-new unit. Seagate’s recertification process gives a level of assurance, but potential buyers should still consider the balance of cost savings against longevity expectations. While recertified drives often meet quality standards, there is an element of risk in terms of lifespan. Fortunately, the warranty (typically around one year) provides some peace of mind. Reliability & NAS Optimization The IronWolf Pro series is known for its durability and NAS-optimized firmware, making it resilient in multi-bay environments where continuous operation is required. This drive supports Seagate’s AgileArray firmware, designed specifically for NAS use, providing stable performance, RAID optimization, and vibration tolerance in multi-drive setups. However, as a recertified drive, it may be slightly more susceptible to wear over time than a new drive, but for most NAS applications, it should hold up well if used within recommended parameters. Noise & Heat Management In terms of noise, the IronWolf Pro is relatively quiet, especially given its enterprise-grade capabilities. It does generate some heat, which is expected for a drive of this size and speed, so adequate ventilation in your NAS setup is recommended. For home office use, the sound levels are manageable, and in a server environment, they would likely go unnoticed. Pros: Massive 18TB storage capacity, perfect for NAS and RAID setups 7,200 RPM and 256MB cache provide fast data access and transfer speeds Optimized for NAS with AgileArray firmware and vibration tolerance Affordable pricing for recertified enterprise-grade storage High endurance for continuous operation (300TB/year workload rating) Cons: Limited warranty compared to new drives (usually around one year) Some risk of reduced lifespan as a recertified unit Generates some heat, so good NAS ventilation is recommended Verdict: The Seagate IronWolf Pro 18TB (Recertified) Enterprise NAS HDD is a solid choice for those looking to maximize storage capacity at a lower cost. It performs well in NAS environments, thanks to NAS-optimized firmware and robust performance, while its recertified status makes it more affordable for budget-conscious users. While there’s a minor risk in longevity compared to a new drive, the IronWolf Pro’s durability and high capacity make it an excellent solution for both business and personal NAS needs. If you need enterprise-grade storage without breaking the bank, this recertified drive offers strong value and performance.

Great drive
So far, so good. I copied 13TB of stuff from my 4 other smaller external drives, and the speed was almost always well over 100 MB/sec. Highest I transfer speed I saw was 150. 20.0TB of formatted space. I've been using Seagate and WD hard drives for over 25 years now, and have only had a couple of them crash. Back in those days, I was running P2P programs non-stop 24/7, so the drives were heavily used, and were NOT enterprise class (young and stupid.... and broke), so I can't fault them for that. Hopefully I'll have the same good luck with this one. Words of advice from somebody who has been doing this for a long, long time. Never, ever, ever CUT and paste your data from the old drive to the new. Always COPY and paste it. That way, if something does go wrong with the new drive during the transfer, you still have all of your data on the old drive. If you truly care about your data, then get a RAID so you have redundancy. If a drive fails, everything can still be retrieved from the other discs in the array. Expensive, but can you put a price on your stuff? If you don't get a RAID, at least get a second drive and get some file syncing software. Run the software frequently. Like any time you update anything on your computer. That way, you always have the backup drive up to date. I use Free File Sync. It's great, and very easy to use. https://freefilesync.org/ Remember, it's not a matter of IF your HDD will fail. It's a matter of WHEN. ALL hard drives will fail eventually. Keep your stuff backed up to multiple locations.

Defective drive.
This drive had fewer than 10,000 power-on hours (9,593) and was operated in a properly cooled NAS enclosure at ~31 °C, well within safe operating conditions. Despite that, the SMART diagnostics show catastrophic failure indicators: 7,809 reallocated sectors 4,003 current pending sectors 4,003 offline uncorrectable sectors 11,107 reported uncorrectable errors 19,547 ATA errors logged Last 9 SMART self-tests failed with read element errors Drive details: Model: ST18000NT001-3NF101 Serial: ZVTGLRM8 Firmware: EN01 Power-On Hours: 9,593 This is not normal wear for a NAS drive rated for enterprise workloads. A drive showing this level of media failure at under 10k hours strongly suggests it was not properly tested before being sold as “recertified.” The failure has forced my RAID array into degraded mode, leaving my data temporarily without redundancy. If you're considering buying recertified drives for a NAS, be aware of the risk. At minimum, run a full SMART and surface test immediately after receiving the drive. Unfortunately, mine failed well after the return window, leaving me stuck with a defective unit. I would not purchase a recertified drive from this seller again.

Still Fantastic SEE 2 YEAR UPDATE: 17000 hours uptime and STILL LOVING THEM
Shipped fast, works great! 1 YEAR UPDATE: I have been running 2 of these non stop in my DS223J Nas for about a year and absolutely love them. I wish i had 36tb of SSD or NVME but WTH with these baddies I am NEVER lacking for space. I have almost 9k hours on each one so far. I got the refurbished versions but i have had 0 issues and have clean sectors and health all the time. Very surprised with how much space you get for the price. 2 YEAR UPDATE: 2 years later these things are still running strong CRAZY how expensive they are now. I got 2 of them for $189 each and now they are like $500+!!!!!! What has happened to the world. Ok i'm done using my amazon review to complain about the market.

Solid Performer
i got 5, 18TB Ironwolf Pro NAS refurb drives (Model ST18000NT001 2023 model) for the NAS and so far they run great! tested all 5 and initially got uptime hours of 5,6,12,16 and 26 hours. so barely used units. they all run good, tested with no errors on short and long S.M.A.R.T. tests and no unusual audible noises. there is the normal boot-up clicking initially and you can hear them but some people make these things seem like your living next to an airport and they arent that loud. if you run a fan in the room you wont hear them. they do however run kind of hot. i got temp warnings while creating a raid pool in unraid and they were pushing 125 degrees. so i stuck a fan infront of them and they are at 99 degrees. the system booted right up and saw each drive. didnt have to make any motherboard configuratiuons. all in all a good hard drive so far. will update if anything else happens.

Great for what I paid for it.
Bought this so I could have a pair that I intend to use for a NAS. I hope I can find another refurbished later at the same price, but seems all hard drive prices have gone crazy lately.

Failing slowly with bad sectors after 1 year of use. But seller took care of me.
Failing slowly with bad sectors after 1 year of use. I reached out to the seller and they took care of me quickly on this. Unfortunately because it is a refurbished unit, I could not go through Seagate on this.
