If spaced out equally, what are shelf space dimensions? I need at least 10.5"

mine are right at 10.5. I had to lay some books on their side. Thinking of going with a larger matching one.

Do I have to assemble it?

Yes, you do. This VASAGLE bookshelf requires assembly, the entire package comes as a flatpack. But it is pretty easy.

Is the backing solid hard wood? Or is it cardboard like Ikea?

Not cardboard but thin wood or wood like. Finished like the rest of the case. Well spaced fasteners to hold it securely on. Looks nice.
