I am not an athlete and have not used a massage gun prior to this. It worked well for gluteus maximus muscles, and while it also worked for gluteus minimus and piriformis muscles, it was a bit more difficult to get deep into those muscles or their trigger points when using it on myself, though still possible. It was helpful for pain and throbbing of upper thighs and down calves, as well, offering good relief during use. The massager offers 4 strength levels and is strong and effective. However, the heat function took quite a while to heat up and was not as effective as the overall massager itself. The biggest drawbacks are the weight of the massager and the unwieldy nature of the device owing to its overall size, making it somewhat top-heavy. Nevertheless, this would not be a deal-breaker given the strength of the massager. Its size was helpful, however, when running it down the legs, for instance. Using it for several months it offered me welcome relief at the moment and over time. The noise level is reasonable and well within what you might expect from such a device. For instance, it is no problem to hold a conversation with others while using the device.
