which side has the magnet that has to face towards the engine/axle?

hold a nail or screw to it and see which side it sticks to :P The side w magnet has an evident metal finsh to it and the other side has more of a rubber feel to it.

Yes both sides. Just make sure you place it in correctly depending on which side you install
