... a men's and a women's to see which fit best. I was referred to a professional about 12yrs ...
I purchased both a men's and a women's to see which fit best. I was referred to a professional about 12yrs ago to be fitted for a brace for foot drop. I paid almost $300. I had to pay 1/2 out of pocket. It was virtually the same brace. The only thing I see that is different is the set up of the strap. The other has a small rivet attaching the velcro outer strap and the toothy strip glued to the other side of the back part. there is also a cushioned pad glued to the inside of the upper back part. This is something I wish this brace had. If my sock falls beneath it the plastic sticks to my skin. I purchased this one for $33 in black because my original one of 12year had been broken when my young son tried to wear it. My husband riveted it back together. I didn't want to spend $300 out of pocket (braces no longer covered through my insurance company) I love that this is in black. I wear a uniform similar to a police uniform w/navy pants, black socks and black boots. I was so excited when I found this in black. Just the cushion strap inside the brace would be a huge improvement. I thought I would have to return the women's because the foot support appeared too small as I have a wide foot. I purchased the male left foot and cut it down. But the ankle part to too wide for my women's shoes. It fits into the men's boots I have but isn't as comfortable. The heal rubs because it is too big for my foot. My husband made some adjustments to the women's brace for me. He cut the toe down. (cut it a bit longer than foot) Mine slides forward a bit and is almost too short. I would cut it a bit, wear it a few days then cut down more if needed. Also the top part of the brace was too small for my calf. My husband used a blowtorch to heat the back a bit then strapped it to a cup to reform it. I would caution against this if not experienced with heating plastic. Over all I am very please with this $33 brace. Even if it doesn't last 12years like my white one it is affordable to replace every few years. Because it is black and inexpensive and almost the same as I have been wearing for 12 years I would recommend it. Throughout the years I have tried several of the types that pull the toe of the foot up using straps/strings and I keep going back to the bottom support. I rarely trip with this brace and I never fall. One additional thing I would like to point out. The strap when velcro is in place does slip down from the brace a bit but this isn't a problem for me because it still supports the foot from underneath. I just tighten it every few hours. But again $33 verses $300 I can live with a few inconveniences. Foot drop in and of itself is an inconvenience.

GREAT AFO!
I have bought three different AFOs from various dealers on Amazon and this one was absolutely the best. It is slightly flexible in the areas where you want it to be. It has an open heal which is great because it doesn't create uncomfortable pressure on the spot. It is slim enough to fit into some shoes and I can wear it in my Johnson Murphy dress shoes for work. It's light and gives you enough support to be able to walk. If your insurance doesn't cover a $900 custom AFO, then this is the next best thing.

Avoid white AliMed AFO.
I ordered one AFO for each foot. The left foot, black in color, has worked very well and helped my balance very well. The right foot, white because black wasn't available that day, has not been as effective, though it has helped my balance; this white one has a leg strap which doesn't hold at all, the velcro doesn't have appropriate material to bind to, and the strap slides down into looseness.

Must alter to fit
I don't mind trimming the foot plate; that is easy. But I had to buy a heat gun, just so I could soften the part that fits around the calf, and widen it some. Honestly....nobody's leg/calf is that thin . Comon, really? Especially if they are wearing a large men's size! Have a heart. The problem with this expansion (not a lot, just a little,) is that it should be done during manufacturing; not after the fact, because, The X-brace openings on the back of the brace are stressed and must give or be adjusted to a wider position as well, because they are attached to the calf part, and expanding the calf puts torque on the top of the X shape. Also, heating it up, even though one MUST, softens and melts the glue that the Velcro is attached with. So you have to be careful not to mess it up in many possible ways. My older version had the strap attached to the brace using a metal rivet of some sort. This is much better. Over time, the glue will allow the strap-attachment position to migrate on the plastic surface of the brace. ( Something else you may need to fix at a later date) If you've worn these braces for near 40 years, like I have, you know that the top of these braces, if not altered, will dig into your calf and cause great abrasion and pain. That being said, this IS a better design than my much older style, which was taller on my calf, came straight up the back of my calf in one piece, and was not open at the heel. It caused its own pain in different ways.

great product
My husband has a partial dropped foot from a bad back surgery. Fortunately he back is fine, but drop foot never recovered. He bought many different types of braces to give his leg some stability. This brace is comfortable. fits well in his sneakers and shoes.Thank you for making a great product. Now my husband can walk with confidence.

It fits into my shoe!
This works! It fits into my shoe. I bought my left sneaker 1 size bigger to accommodate the brace, my sock and my foot. Because of the way it is made I can pull it on already set up . I didn’t have to cut it or anything . I definitely recommend this as I have a custom brace that I can not wear a shoe with as easy . At first glance it looks cheap and I was worried that it would not allow me to walk with out padding it up by the toes (as they had to do at the prosthetic shop my custom brace came from) but after giving it a try I am able to walk it greatly improved my gait ! I plan to get at least 2 more just to have on hand or in another shoe. I’m grateful fir this product .
