Although since superseded by MOLLE, ALICE gear is still in some limited use in the U.S. Army in National Guard and training units, as well as by Navy and Air Force ground units. The U.S. Marine Corps currently uses ALICE gear in training only. All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment (ALICE) introduced in 1974 was made up of components for two types of load: the "fighting load" and the "existence load". Tie down straps and D-rings inside the bag are used to shorten the backpack if it is not to be fully filled. The bag flap has a pocket that can be opened by pulling apart 2 tabs. Small flat items can be carried in this bag. By squeezing the flap sides, it is closed. Hangers are also provided for carrying individual equipment. The ALICE field pack is worn on the soldier's back by attaching it to the packing frame. - An envelope pocket is located at the top, back of the backpack and padded with spacer cloth into which the field pack frame is inserted when the field pack is used on the field packing frame. Buckles and straps on each side near the ground are used to anchor the field pack to the field pack frame. 2 rectangular wire loops on the top back of the field pack and D-rings on each side at the bottom of the field pack are used to attach the shoulder strap. - The large ALICE backpack system offers padded and easily adjustable shoulder straps that relieve pressure while the kidney pad strap on the frame helps with heavy loads. The quick release buckle allows the entire backpack to be dropped immediately in an emergency situation.
